Inside Gavin Houghton's tiny ‘playhouse’ of a cottage in Oxfordshire | Design Notes



Gavin Houghton’s rented cottage in Oxfordshire, shared with his photographer partner Boz Gagovski, is the most charmingly informal of the interior designer’s houses, a weekend getaway filled with his own creative work and an array of enviable antique market finds. “If I owned it I’d be more precious about it,” says Gavin. “But as it was I’ve been quite playful, and I think of the house really as a playhouse.” You can see Gavin’s houses in London and Tangier in the August issue of House & Garden, which is out now.

    What a sweet couple–I like the rhythm of their lives. A little cottage is my dream, one I cannot seem to realize for lack of money but I like to live vicariously through these videos and make my apartment and balcony garden just as cozy. Lots of vintage items, plants everywhere and objects found in nature.

    The black mother with children painting in the bedroom felt a bit random since neither of them are black and no backstory was given like with the other images it’s almost like it was hung there to say by the way everyone we are NOT racist. Which they’re obviously not but why would you put a mom and kids hanging above your bed where you have sex. It’s just a weird vibe.

    These videos are wonderful. A dreamy country cottage. I love the ceiling candle 🕯 light fitting. If everything goes bang in the night at least you have that. The pretty white patterned chair is gorgeous. But the dogs are the best in this video. So cute & well behaved.
