Let me tell you a garden win-win story: 2 years ago, while my mom and I were removing weeds, we came across this plant: had a striped, jagged leaf with little purple flowers. It was in the back corner of our garden among other weeds. I happen to like the foliage so we decided to move it to the flower bed under the big lilac shrubs. Later, I found out the name: “spotted dead nettle” (Lamium) – turns out it is sold as a ground cover. Last year, we had a particularly windy autumn and many of the big trees’ leaves landed in our backyard. As we filled up what seemed like dozens of yard waste bags with leaves, I thought perhaps we could just pile some leaves onto the flower beds so that, over the winter, the leaves would break down and release their nutrients to the soil.
