Planting a Forest in a Day – 300k Subscriber Special

Today we’ll be spending a day planting a forest of 300 native trees to bring back some of the wild food sources that would have once grown on this land before it was turned into a grassland. Hopefully overtime as this forest grows, it will support some of the native wildlife that once thrived in this area before it was turned into farmland.
I’ll be taking you through the whole process of planting this forest, talking about the trees that I’ll be growing, and covering things like succession of forests and how I plan to eventually get rid of the grass underneath and turn it into a more diverse forest overtime.

Each tree represents 1000 of my subscribers, and this New Zealand native forest marks the milestone of this channel reaching 300K subs! Thank you so much for your ongoing support!

Hi, I’m Kalem, and this channel features all sorts of unusual and exotic fruiting plants with tips of how to successfully grow them. I’m interested in all things gardening and love growing my own food and all types of edible plants.
I live on a 2 acre piece of land in New Zealand where we are turning a grass paddock into and abundant, edible paradise and food forest! So come along on this journey with me as I experiment with growing, and try to push the limits of what I can grow. I’ll share with you my successes and failures so hopefully you’ll learn from them and have a go yourself! Come learn with me and Subscribe to join this awesome community 🙂

  1. Do you have a favourite tree that's native to your country? Let me know below! 🙂

Thanks so much for watching, and for your ongoing support!

  2. Congrats on your 315K subs! I will always remember you as the dude that made popular growing coconuts in New Zealand 🙂

  3. Sitting in the Northern hermisphere in Germany in late October watching strawberries grow!!!! It's hard to think about what tree could face the upcoming climate change. Forests are being rebuilt from coniferous trees to deciduous trees. I think introducing mediteranean species which are still frost resistant might be a good option.
I once asked about peach trees which whould do just fine here and I already collected seeds and plan to grow them according to your peach tree video.

  4. Congratulations on the 300K Kalem, well deserved! What an incredible way to celebrate by planting a forest! I've always enjoyed following you along over the years and can't wait to see you hit the next milestone!

  5. Congratulations on this milestone Kalem! And wonderful work planting so many native trees, both of you! 💪

  6. He sounds like the Pikey Brad Pitt from the awesome movie The Snatch and also he says fungi like a Japanese girl. “Fungee” 🤗

  7. Its great what you do and you got in some beautiful cinematic shots but aren't these trees WAY to close together ?
In germany (where im from) trees have to be planted 4-10 meters apart depending on species, the ones in the vid seem a bit close to each other

  8. I live in Georgia USA, just planted back in February: 3 cherry, 3 peach, 1 plum, 1 pear, 1 apple, some papaya and bunch of kiwi. So far they’re doing well despite the drought currently in my area!
    💝 Natural environment!
    Don’t like city!
Thank you for all you share!

  9. Your videos make one desirous of visiting if not settling in New Zealand. You do have an ideal lifestyle. God bless you and yours. I dream of planting prehistoric plants on my land. Ginkgo, Red Dawn spruce, mosses, ferns, lichens, resurrection plants, etc.

  10. Congrats on 300k! Just…one thing. That's a "transfer shovel" (for moving material, not digging holes) … What you need is a "spade" type of shovel…it would have been heaps less effort for the work you did here. Anyway, keep up the great content!

  11. Congrats on 300k!!! My favorite trees here are our aspens! I grew up exploring Pando, one of the largest and oldest living organisms. So lucky to have been able to grow up next to it!

  12. Hi Kalem, congratulations on reaching 300,000 subs. Always find you videos beneficial with ideas and learn a lot of helpful tips. Great environmental way to celebrate by planting 300 new trees on your property.

  13. I enjoyed the footage of the old growth forest contrasting with the agricultural land. You're going to have the best of both worlds. Cheers

  14. We plant the cordyline at my parents house 12 years ago and even in the arid southern area of Australia it survived without water
