Generally Soft Neck Garlic lasts longer than the Hard Neck Garlic which doesn’t store as well but is more flavoursome.
You should be able to use the Soft Neck Garlic for planting next year especially if you refrigerate prior to planting.
I’ve never tried growing elephant garlic or soft neck garlic. maybe i’ll get some next year. Those plots look great with the compost you added. Compost is really high here so i have to make my own and never have that volume at one time. You look like yer back is doing good. my 11 broken vertebrae are talkin pretty loud lately. Probably the weather change.
I planted some hard neck garlic about a month ago and just planted some Susanville garlic a week or so ago… I’m probably way too late with it. We moved this May from zone 8B-9 to 6B, so quite a lot of adjusting to do, as far as planting and timing… plus I’ve never grown garlic before, so…. Hoping for the best…
I don't know if what we have is the elephant garlic already planted, my mother and father in law planted them years ago and they just keep making every year. This weekend I need to go ahead and get the corms in the ground elsewhere to make more and chop or slice to have the garlic ready to cook with. Got my calient mustard seed in the mail Sunday and already got them in the ground with the tillage radish plot. Can't wait to see how those help for the potato bed next year. Thanks for that idea, Travis. That made up my mind what to plant there.i think I may have enough seed left over for next year cover crop, but I'll have to order more after that or lean how to harvest the seed myself. Great garlic video Travis as always!
Hey Travis! Great content as always. About beets, you said boron is key. Could you give me some direction on where to find it? I swore you said micronutrients but the stuff I have doesn’t list boron. Also if boron is good for beets would that apply to other root crops like turnips and kohlrabi? Also the savanna mustard seed I ordered should get here today, super excited to try it , lol even got rutabaga seed, never tried that before either. Have a great one!
Words to live by. Don’t be hoing around too much. I’ve had luck doubling up on hardneck caddy corner on an emitter. The elephant is prob too big for that. Good luck to your crops!
How do you know when onions start the bulbing stage to switch to just nitrogen?
just placed my order, hopefully i get some garlic! love watching your videos
Thank you! I have been waiting for a good video on the elephant garlic. We got ours planted this past weekend. My hubby couldn't wait anymore. Lol I'm planting my corms next in a separate large pot. I appreciate you and your knowledge Travis!
Rain and snow today, high of 44. Getting ourselves vernalized for next spring. Good show as always.
I have always had better luck with hard neck. This is due to mostly not timing it right. Soft neck seems to be more time dependent and split easier if left in too long. Though soft neck is suppose to be better for the south. I keep both hard and soft neck over ever year.
I am in zone 8b in North Texas. I have planted soft neck garlic for the last 3 years and only bought the seed stock the first year. I think I initially bought a pound. This year I just planted over 5 pounds. I didn’t put it in the fridge or freezer but stored it in the house. I planted a 5×10 raised bed at a spacing of 9 per square foot. It’s all germinated. We will see how much it produces in the spring. I planted in straight compost no additional fertilizer.
Do you know of any place where I can order elephant garlic? Seems all the online stores are out.
I ordered garlic and shallots from Filaree and contacted them about sending it on so I could put it in the fridge for vernalization . This is what they said, vernalization is not necessary since you will receive strains well suited for your climate. I couldn't make up my mind so I chose a garden pack that was a mix of hard and soft neck. Me being in Athens and not too far from you, we will see how it turns out. If they do good here for me they may work for you. I bought elephant garlic from Walmart produce last year and planted it and now have my own seed stock from it.
Got my garlic planted yesterday got to straw this evening I planted it in beds
Another great episode, just like all the others. You are the best garden site anywhere. You teach very well and show everything clearly. And you have a good ear for music. Thank you
Alright Alright Alright lets plant some garlic
I planted 100 last year. This year I planted about 400-500. Next year I’m planted 1200 and I’ll start selling it locally. Hard neck, soft neck and elephant. I’ve found nutrients is the most important factor to bulb size.
Would growing elephant garlic over and over in the same spot work you think in the south (north florida here just below you) with the heat and humidity?
I grow the Kettle River Giant softneck for years now. Here in Spartanburg county SC (7b) I plant about October 15. No vernalizing here. Harvest in May. Tie them in bundles of 8 and hang in the carport for 2 weeks or so to cure. Then cut the tops and roots off and put the bulbs in the legs of old pantyhose tying a knot between every 2 bulbs. Hang them in the pantry and when we need more garlic just cut below a knot. Kettle River should keep for 9 months this way but I usually still have some useable garlic after a year when I harvesting the next crop. I Save the 10 best looking bulbs for replanting in a paper bag and store with my seeds.
Okay, I know I'm not supposed to say anything and I don't know if your wife agrees, but the facial hair looks good on you.
We live in the upper part of Virginia. We plant hard-neck garlic and just got it in the ground a few days ago. Hard-neck garlic makes it at room temperature from harvest time long enough to replant in the the fall but it is showing its age by now. We just look for the biggest cloves on our bulbs and make sure they aren't soft and haven't dehydrated too much in the wrapper. I've not grown soft-neck garlic but I hear that lasts longer at room temperature than hard-neck. I usually put some bone meal in each hole but this time I just dug furrows with a hoe and put bone meal, a bit of Espoma fertilizer, and a bit of LeafGrow in the furrow with garlic. We've never irrigated our garlic and so far it has been fine.
Great vid as per usual young sir. I have another off topic question for you. The previous owner of my property heavily planted a large portion of my yard with those pines in the picture. I am expecting to have to take most of them out to open up light and start building soil there. Chip and compost the branches and use the trucks for poles for a chicken run. Pine bark for blueberries? Have you any thoughts or experience with this type of soil?
Great video !!! Do you soak your garlic before planting?
I have been growing garlic for a long time, I always save the best looking bulbs for fall planting. The old saying for garlic is plant the best and eat the rest. The garlic will adjust itself to your growing conditions over several years, not that it changes genetically but rather that it has a wide range of adaptability built into its genetics! All the true garlic groups originate from the True Purple Stripe group (a hard neck) so one soft neck group might be more closely related to a certain hard neck than another soft neck group. Your true garlic will hopefully grow nice big bulbs in the first year but if they are only small give it time to adapt to your garden.
Klaus
Great video as always. I know that you used your seed stock for this planting but where did you get it originally?
