Japanese Garden

The surprising archaeology of Japanese American internment gardens | Bonnie J. Clark | TEDxMileHigh

During World War II, the United States forcibly removed over 120,000 Japanese Americans from their homes on the West Coast and sent them to confinement camps in remote and often barren areas of the country’s interior. Archaeologist Bonnie J. Clark studies this dark, often overlooked moment in US history and takes us inside a camp known as Amache, where she’s uncovered something surprising (and beautiful) buried in the soil.

Dr. Bonnie J. Clark co-leads the DU Amache Project, a community collaboration researching, preserving, and interpreting Amache, Colorado’s World War II-era Japanese American incarceration camp. She is a professor of Anthropology at the University of Denver & the Curator of Archaeology at the DU Museum of Anthropology. She earned a Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley. Bonnie believes that tangible history, objects, sites, and landscapes help us better understand our humanity. In her free time, she enjoys hiking and skiing across the west. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

  5. In that period the Italians who lived in USA were labelled by American Government as enemy aliens, and they were sent back to Italy to fight against nazifascism. They fought and died for America and for the rest of the World, they wore the American Military Uniform and fought under the American flag. I know that there were also internment camps for Americans of German and Italian ancestry.

  6. He was held in a Japanese camp. And tortured. Every day. He saw his buddies be treated the same way and it was a classic treatment of systemic racism. Pur boys were less than them. Not allowed to speak, not allowed to go to the toilet when they needed. Their poohs while they were forced to work had to pile in their pants, if they could make at all. The truth is they were starved. And many were starved to death. And beaten daily. And millions died at their hands in their camps. Millions.
    This is the truth.

Horror was on the faces of the prisoners of war kept by the Japanese. Horror, it is said, does not quite explain it. No words. These poor individuals had again found, as dogs do, the ability to feed on things where no other food-stuffs were available and made do with the rotting pieces of uncooked meat. It doesn't take a ..
We should never forget. Ever. Ever. Ever. That is what happened. And much worse.

  12. This was NOT racism. This was necessary at the horrible time. Horrors faced our men and they were murdered and terrorised by the enemy. This is reality.

  13. These horrors must never be forgotten.
This is why we interred them.
    Properly so too.
Yes. They are our friends now. But never forget the disgraces they perpetrated upon us.. and it was not necessary.

  22. Most people want freedom but, a few desire to control others because they see it as their life’s calling to led. These are the tyrants, communists, socialists. A few Japanese paraded around camp with the imperial Japanese flag touting their loyalty to imperial japan. Balloon bombs 285 were discovered 1000s were sent. The government suppressed the information, the Japanese thought they weren’t successful. Had they launched the balloons during the dry season CA would have burned. Studio City an Burbank CA was covered with a canvas covering, this is where the American fighter planes were manufactured. How many spies would it have taken? America almost lost WWII. What would life have been like under imperial Japan? The had gardens because they were given food. Americans were the most civl society in the world then not so today.
