Secrets Of Sissinghurst Castle | The Most Beautiful Gardens In England?

‘Secrets Of Sissinghurst Castle | The Most Beautiful Gardens In England?’

In the heart of Kent is one of Britain’s most intriguing houses: Sissinghurst Castle Garden. Originally a grand Elizabethan manor, by the 20th century Sissinghurst had fallen into a ruinous state. Yet it was this wildness and disrepair which enchanted one of the bestselling writers of the 1920s, Vita Sackville-West.

Vita Sackville-West’s ability to create beautiful scenes of romance extends beyond her poems and into the emerald mazes at her home, Sissinghurst Castle. The poet and her husband, Harold Nicholson, fell in love with the castle and farm at first glance in 1930 and quickly began making plans to restore the property to its full glory. Together, they laid the foundation for one of England’s most famous gardens with its manicured rose section and the famous White Garden, which houses some of the couple’s favourite plants like white gladioli, white irises, white pompom dahlias, and white Japanese anemones.

Joined by National Trust experts and leading historians, Alice Loxton uncovers the secrets of Sissinghurst – and in turn, the fascinating aspects of Vita’s unique character. From her bestselling writing to the creation of a world class garden, from a loving relationship with her husband Harold to many passionate romances with women, Vita was a remarkable woman, trapped between the old and new. This is the story of Vita’s Sissinghurst – a story of Vita in love.

  1. I used to be the nighttime security Dog Handler at Sissinghurst I was made to feel very welcome by all the staff

  2. Living close by, and being a member of the NT, it has been a great pleasure over the years to visit Sissinghurst and Knole with members of my family. The NT have done a wonderful job at Sissinghurst of maintaining the property and gardens and documenting Vita's life and work. And Knole's not too shabby either! Lovely video.

  3. I used to work on the tills at a nearby garden centre to Sissinghurst Castle, made a killing on white bedding plants

  4. Trump is a real estate professional. He should offer $600,000 for that dirty old place. Does it even have central AC?

  5. Very informative video, please Alice stop biting your nails they look terrible

  6. I visited Sissinghurst back in the early 2000's with my late father who I think had been there when he was growing up. It was an amazing day and the weather was kind so I was out and about taking photographs (for a qualification in photography) but I possibly missed the history to really take it all in. I think I'll add this to my bucket list of places to revisit again but to appreciate the history better and take a second day to photograph again with better knowledge.

  7. I really enjoyed this video. What a beautiful place.
The library you show at the end is a picture I have seen
before. I am happy to know where it is located.
Thank you for this wonderful video. I only wish it were longer.
