Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart โ€“ to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Frost came two weeks early to Talladega County Alabama. My peppers, tomatoes, and Lemon Squash are all covered with fruit. They are all planted in raised beds and grow pots. I'm not ready to give up on getting more fruit from them. The peppers are tough and healthy. I've had them shrug off worse last year. They survived the first night, the coldest of three nights, without any problems, not the least bit of wilting. The pepper plants in my mother's garden look terrible, but will recover. I covered my tomatoes, potatoes, and squash with sheets and towels yesterday evening, and removed the wet and frosty sheets this morning, and put them in the dryer, to dry them out for use tonight. The squash surprised me, they came through the first frost without the least bit of wilt. The tomato plants look a little bit wilty, but that may have more to do with being covered with heavy wet sheets. They will spring back to life as they warm up, and get a little sun and warmth. I was sure my eggplant would have suffered damage, as I left them uncovered. They didn't suffer the least bit of damage. The snow peas, love the cold weather, and are thriving. Everything in my GreenStalk towers survived the first freeze, 4-5 hours of freezing temperatures. All of my raised beds, except the pepper bed, are covered with cat netting. Even the newly sprouted seedlings survived the frost and freezing temperatures without any issues. I have potatoes ready for harvest. I was supposed to do it yesterday, and didn't. I have another batch that won't be ready until mid December, an experiment in progress.

  2. I have carrots and parsnips in my Greenstalk here in northern South Dakota. The field crops are harvested except the corn and that will start today! We have had 13 and 14 degrees already. Nice days ahead (except Jess might debate that) in the 50โ€™s and 60โ€™s!

  3. Always ironic watching a โ€œcold frontโ€ video on a โ€œheat alertโ€ 96 degree day in the San Fernando Valley in California.

  4. Hey Jess! We have tried buying black sunflower seeds since we saw how beautiful they we back in your Arkansa garden. We have been scammed every time we bought the seeds and ended up with yellow sunflowers ๐ŸŒป. Where did you find your seeds? โค๏ธ

  5. 52 can be cold if there is no Sun! Stay warm, my friend! Great video..I just love listening to you ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. So painful walking out to the garden this morning here in the upstate. Way to early for our first frost and we got nailed with below freezing temps even though the forecast was calling for 36. I was so looking forward to a lovely autumn in the garden after the brutal spring and summer we had, but this morning felt like winter. ๐Ÿ˜ข On the bright side, sunflowers are a little more frost tolerant than we give them credit for and mine made it through when the cosmos and zinnias all died.๐ŸŒป

  7. I'm in Montana and our first frost date is near the end of September. We have not had any frost yet. The closest we've come had been 36ยฐ. Unbelievable!

  8. Hi Jess. Little tip if you role up the sides of your hoops the other way you won't get water in the plastic. I have had algae problems in the past. Glad to see you are doing better.

  9. Lol it was 39 f here this morning and I was out in pajama shorts and a flimsy sweatshirt. Somehow you guys are getting your frost early and ours is like 2 weeks late but it's coming Saturday and will be here to stay.

  10. Good morning Sowards! So yeah I worked all day yesterday to make room in my barn/shed (barn looking 16 X 16 shed LOL) for my thankfully plants in grow bags. I have tomatoes and 1 green bell pepper plant from a friend, some cinnamon and other basil, Cuban oregano I moved up with me from Florida I've had growing for a few years now and 2 little strawberry plants that were store bought I'm desperate to save since I have bad luck with strawberries from seed and pretty much just bad luck with growing them in general and they look pretty good compared to seasons past when I've purchased them to grow. Well zone 8A here in Warner Robins GA and it got cold and the cold here is bitter cold for myself and my hubby. Even in the 50's we were freezing LOL so I did what I had to do.

Anyway just wanted to give props for the wonderful work you all are doing not just on your farm but here on your channel in the comments. I got spammed on your last video with a reply from that fake Telegram channel and I came to report them and there wasn't any replies to report so I know you or you have someone working hard to remove those spammer comments. This has been for a few comments I've left on other channels so its not only your videos, but unlike the other channels it's happened you have got to them and did whatever could be done to remove them. It almost makes me not want to comment because it can't happen then but that is not fair to you creators who work so hard and reply on your viewers comments. Love yall!

  11. Gluten, dairy, and sugar free will make such a difference in your health. I promise. Oh and no nightshades.

  12. Nice to see your Arkansas high tunnel in the Growers Solutions ad along with Living Traditions too.

  13. Your sweater is "full of holes" the breeze can blow through so, even a light windbreaker jacket will majorly increase the effectiveness of the sweater.

  14. Oh No….Don't give those eggplants away. Put then through the grater and freeze it to make Eggplant Salsa at a later time. It is FANTASTIC! One of my family's favs.
Glad to see you are healing.
Have you tried Calendula oil on your skin? I was wondering if you had any success with it?

  15. Jessica, does the company you got your high tunnel from make the smaller? What company did you get them from?

  16. We had a early first frost last week. Last night we had record lows of 19F here in Sulphur Springs. I covered all my frost hardy stuff. Harvested all the green tomatoes. Picked my Zinnias yesterday and said goodbye. Is there a trick to growing Holy Basil? I would like to do better with it next year. I started them under grow lights and put them out but they grew slowly and of course did not make it through this hard frost.

  17. ๐Ÿ’š We'll be @ 85ยฐ here today with a low in the mid 50ยฐs, no frost in sight here on the coast of Central California, still plenty of growing season here. Wish I could be at the Batesville Art Event on Sunday and have you sign my copy of your book! ๐Ÿ’š

  18. Iโ€™ve lived all over the place. In Oregon it stayed green, in Texas it was gray, but in Ohio and Minnesota it turns bright white.

  19. Yeah the cold early this year. Itโ€™s October 19th and it was 37 when I woke up! In north of Houston! Texas!

  20. Iโ€™m with you Jess, no gluten! โค Yes not eating nightshades, too! Trying to heal! Blessings!
