Box Garden is growing incredibility Fast, food is already being harvested almost daily. Things are Growing in the boxes like radishes, kale, cucumbers, squash, onions, sungold tomatoes, 100’s tomatoes, scarlet runner beans, peas zucchini, squash and more. Growing in Free Cardboard Boxes, growing food. Boxes are free and best of all when they break down and turn into Compost, you will end up with Great soil next growing season with soil you made. Growing in cardboard boxes, totes and in the ground, food of all kinds.
From what I can find, Corrugated boxes are printed with an Environmentally friendly type ink, but I would not compost other types of food boxes like cereal boxes, cookie boxes, cake mix boxes and so forth, as those inks are made to last lots of handling, look showy and are shiny and are ‘iffy”.

  1. I love stir frying zucchini leaves. I also use pumpkin leaves, sweet potato leaves, young hostas, etc. All good.

  2. I tried 2 of the boxes with zucchini but here in zone 6a we have been having a lot of rain and it has turned cold again 😑 but the plants are doing great!!!

  3. You can grow anything you want because you're in Southern California. I'm green with envy. It seems like spring and fall last about a minute here in East Texas. Young plants get hit with frost, then it's suddenly too hot and dry. Shade cloth helps, and a heated greenhouse, but I don't have either…yet. your methods are working pretty good for me despite the local challenges. I'm trying to build a mini food forest with a variety of habitats like a small pond, sunny quarters, maybe espalier, my own little world.

  4. Robbie your box garden is looking awesome!! Thank you for sharing.

  5. Garden soil is fine in raised beds as long as its not your only medium. Need a layer of leaves, paper, branches, etc and then also a little compost (bagged is ok) mixed into the top bit of garden soil. I filled a couple of mine that way last year and it worked out fine. I mixed some chicken manure into the top . Things grew wonderfully! Except the peanuts I tried…those didn't do well at all.

  6. Have you ever weighed your harvests and tallied at end of season. I’d be curious to see that. Then you could tally the money you’ve saved. Could be fun.

  7. I'm curious about how you deal with pests other than squirrels; namely insects that eat or harm plants. I remember my Mom pulling large green worms off her tomatoes. How do you deal with those and other bugs?

  8. just had a squirrel tear up our seedlings in containers. it was all dug up so I am guessing it was for the compost layer. we made the covers out of the lids and tulle. so far so good. thank you for the simple genius ideas!

  9. But doesn’t potting mix have that nasty fertilizer in it . I use garden soil and add pear lite for drainage and my homemade compost

  10. When did you start your plants in the box bcuz I’ve had mine in since March and the leaves are half the size of yours, but they’re flowering but not really growing in size. It get full sun here in Fresno and warmhot weather.

  11. To continue… my zucchini Armenian cucumber watermelon cantaloupe tomatoes and potatoes are growing in follage but not like urs. I’m using container soil with fertilizer and/or worm castings. And water everyday. Help pls

  12. How did u build that planter box ? And if I’m not wrong that’s wire shelves around it right ? Please share where you got them ang how you built it, thanks Robbie

  13. Good to see the boxes taking off!

I have no clue whether beans really help their companion plants but I have walked around for years now putting beans wherever I think there might be room. I just like them, they do well in heat, and they do not seem to hurt any of the plants around them. Plus I am ok with extra beans to eat!

  14. How do you deal with the cabbage moths. They love kale. Last year they laid their eggs on my geraniums. Do they attack tree collards as well? How do you protect your plants from them?

  15. You have a very nice garden. I can tell you put a lot of work and love into it. I appreciate you sharing any tips & tricks.
I’m a gardener too. I also make gardening videos. I’m trying to anyway I get a lot of dirt on my camera somehow. This is my 3rd year but I still have so much to learn. I hope we can learn more from each other as we grow!

  16. I am thinking about doing this but I've heard the cardboard attracts termites. Have you seen any or had any problems?

  17. Thanks Robbie for the explanation of the difference between putting soil and garden soil. I like to coupon and had gotten a couple of bags of garden soil for free, and was just getting ready to load up some containers with it, so your timing was perfect! Thanks for saving the day for me before I realized the error in my ways the hard way! 🙂

  18. Amazing how we forget how easy we can grow our own food on pennies of a dollar. Thank you for all your great tips of making garden low cost and for anyone wherever they may live.

  19. Question….. Where are you? Would be SO helpful to at least know what STATE you are in to compare your growing cycle to ours. When you say "it's still cold here" ….. Where??? SOOOOO important in gardening to know where you are in your weather pattern to be able to know more about where you are in your garden cycle.

  20. How cool! I didn’t love the idea of using totes, just because it makes things kinda a mishmash, but duh- what a good idea to do it this way! Looks really good! ❤️ Always wondered what the difference was in those soils Thanks for the info!

  21. The box thing wouldnt work in our wet climate, the slugs would just go hide right under it

  22. This box planting experiment was really worthwhile Robbie. I'm going to do it because I have spots around the yard that need time to "fix up". So a box that will disintegrate will help for next year growing in ground. Thank you for sharing this. Oh, boxes need a bit of support so your setup (corralled in that area) works well.

  23. I am a new subscriber, as a kind subscriber recommended you! I live in central California and can only grow in containers. This year is my first garden ever! I went to buy some bins to plant some veggies in, but they were $12 each, so I didn't buy any. I just realized I paid $12 each for large planters to grow my garden in! I also bought 5 gallon buckets, but they aren't as wide as I would like.
I was so excited about subscribing, that I'm commenting before watching the video!
    I'm going to watch now!!
BTW, I'm spending a fortune on Miracle Grow potting soil!
I'm anxious to start box gardening! I hope they don't fall apart on me!
My current problem is bugs on my cucumber and squash leaves! 🤯
    Love, Jan 📖 💕 🕊

  24. Would it hurt to paint the boxes, or would the paint harm it?
Also, what is that stick with the red plastic container dangling on top for? To scare away birds? Ty 🤗

  25. I just love your videos! I’m taking a break from my gardening to drink a cup of coffee and watch some of these! Thanks for sharing! Best wishes from Indiana!

  26. I just planted in cardboard boxes it has been crazy wet here but I figured as it broke down I can compost the box and move the plants if I need to.
