Compared to root vegetables like carrots and beets, parsnips are a root vegetable that tends to not get as much attention in the backyard garden. But they should!
We grew parsnips for the first time this winter and we’ve quickly realized that they should always be a part of our backyard gardening plan going forward. Not only are parsnips easy to grow, but they’re absolutely delicious! Join us as we harvest the rest of our parsnips and show you our favorite way to prepare them.

Think I'm gonna give them a try this fall, name please I forgot what you said they were called…. bought a scuffle hoe a few years back made by Rogue (hand made in the USA) and it's awesome saves time and looks like you use it the same way as your diamond hoe, and easier than a regular hoe!!! Your videos always have great information👍… ✌
Hi, over here in the UK, it's generally considered that the foliage only becomes a problem as a skin irritant when the plants start to go to flower.
I suppose it's the plant's way of protecting itself from grazing animals before it sets seed.
You may have already done your research but the sap doesn't burn straight away, the problem occurs when the sap on your skin is exposed to sunlight. Later in the day hours after you've come in contact with it, you suddenly blister up something terrible. Some people get 1st & 2nd burns which can also leave scars and the area can also become photo-sensitive, making you very susceptible to further complaints if your affected area is exposed to sunlight, this can go on for months.
Ty Travis, I just ordered this variety of parsnips, I'll plant some for now, and try some for fall harvest too..love them roasted! With other veggies too..
Great vid Travis 👍👍as always!! Happy spring and the real grow season is coming!
It's been decades since I have planted a garden, but I remember radish foliage would bug my skin if I handled it too much without rinsing/washing said skin. It never bothered me enough, but your comment about the parsnip woke that memory up! Gray cells in Amy's brain awake! Lol!
You have a beautiful harvest there!
Peace on your doorstep!
I am trying parsnips this year.
Hey y'all, To be honest Sam I am I do not like parsnips at all! not in a box not with a fox and so on and so on. I did watch the video liked it shared it on facebook and twitter just like always.
Parsnips are the genus Pastinaca, the closely related genus Heracleum will absolutely cause a photosensitive rash in susceptible individuals on a par with poison ivy. Parsnip has low levels of the furanocumarins responsible for the reaction. It's a dose response and it takes time out in UV light (like sunlight). A less furanocoumarin rich plant (or a plant that hasn't reached that stage in its lifecycle where it tanks up) and an individual with thicker skin and you're unlikely to have issues, but a child gets into the wrong plant and they are going to be miserable for days.
I'm sold. Will try planting parsnips next fall.
After you got done frying the parsnips, I thought they looked like potato chips (which you then confirmed) I've never had them. Still working on my carrot growing skills for getting consistently nice carrots. For me, they always seem to take much longer than what the seed packet says. 😅
Bronze fennel seems to work better for the butterflies for me. It dies back in the winter but comes right back early spring.
How did you store the spinach?
I love parsnips.
Thanks for the video on the parsnips. I've never tried them. Maybe I'll plant some next fall. We just got a huge storm. Right after I tilled up my plots of course. But now I can put my homegrown fertilizer (rabbit gold) and get it turned in. That wheel hoe shows its coming in today so that should be perfect timing for this weekend. I've still got watermelon seeds germinating randomly in the seed start I up pot them after they've had a day or so of getting strong enough to do so. I'm hoping for moon and stars and Georgia rattlesnake. I think I'll be doing two varieties each year and see which ones we like best. Sure would like to try those orange crunch (crush?) Yall had last year. I need to bo back and see where you got those from. Great videos! I bet the boys would have been great help getting down there for them. Love yall!
I've never had parsnips but want to try them. Thx for another great video 👍
That is some beautiful spinach!!! And… when on earth did you plant it?
Mine is just starting to get their first set of true leaves. Chesapeake, VA zone 7B/8A
Those parsnip chips look amazing! The compost is doing well too!
Klaus
I am glad at least some of your peas survived the frost. Yes, those spinaches looks great, and some great exercise, 😂. The plots are looking good. Yes, very nice parsnips. I tried to grow parsnips but they did not germinate. Nice compost bins.
I fell in love with the music on the vlog and just had to look up the artist. Being from NJ I'd never heard of Claire Kelly but she is now one of my new favorites! Thank you for the info on pea trellising, parsnips and composting. As always, I learned a lot. Still luv you an you're always the star of the show, but Claire got my heart on this one!
I'm going to have to give them parsnips a try this coming fall.
When I was visiting Ireland, I ordered a meal the side dish was mashed carrots and parsnips I've never seen it on a menu since but it was pretty good.
Never tried parsnips, but they look pretty tasty. Wonder how they'd turn out in the de-hydrator?
I love parsnips! I planted them one year beside my carrots, and the carrots nor the parsnips did very well that year. I read about companion planting carrots and parsnips, that they do not like to be planted together. Not sure if that was a coincidence, but I thought I would share that. Keep up the good work Travis, really enjoy your channel!!!

Is there anything some t-posts and string can't do?
After watching your videos…just giving some thoughts…doing this for every few, perhaps 3 or 4 videos…
For growers, planters and those who are curious about cooking…
Grow, clean and finally cook (each session with different recipe if it's same crop)…just like this video…
