The “Abandoned & Creepy” Wizard of Oz Theme Park: Land of Oz | Expedition Extinct

Up in the mountains of North Carolina exists a mysterious place where if you follow a partially stolen yellow brick road you might find an abandoned Wizard of Oz Theme Park. The story of this often-called creepy park though is much deeper than even Dorothy could imagine. The Land of Oz.

  1. Am I the only one that found the Wizard of Oz creepy as hell. I never liked the film.

  2. I lived at base of Beech Mt in the 70's in the town of Banner Elk. Never had any desire to visit the park

  3. The Wizard of Oz was written to talk about political corruption during Baum's time. It wasnt a true children's book. All the characters represent real political figures.

  4. If this were built today it would be called the land of TRANS Dorthy would follow the yellow brick road to find Mr. Oz to beg him for a sex change. All the other characters in the story would be deemed offensive to fringe groups like the tin man, straw man, lion, and of course the midgets. The wicked witch of the north would still be white, but the good witch would changed to black.

  5. This is so cool. I bet this video and the ability to market it to a larger audience will finally help it. That is the one area I feel wasn't done well which preventrd a larger success. I looked into the Autumn of Oz on the website. I'd love to take my family, but guess we'll have to wait to see the cost as it gets closer. Unfortunately, the total cost for a family to do these one day events is high. Individually, it doesn't seem to bad.

  6. My parents took my brother and I here when we were kids back in the late 70s. My mom still has all the photos she took of us with the different characters, walking on the yellow brick road and us on the hot air balloon ride. Thank you for this video. You brought a tears to this 50 year old man's eyes. This was part of my childhood I'd love to live over again.

  7. Fun Fact: Unbeknownst At The Time, Professor Marvel Is Wearing L. Frank Baum's Jacket

For Marvel's look, the director wanted a kind of seedy gentility, so the costume department went down to a second-hand store and picked out a bunch of coats. On set, actor Frank Morgan turned the coat pocket inside out. To his shock, "L. Frank Baum" was stitched on the inside. Later both Baum's tailor and widow would confirm the jacket had belonged to the author.

  8. Fun Fact: Dorothy's Iconic White Shirt Was Actually Pink

Due to the idiosyncrasies of Technicolor, it was easier to film a pink shirt and make it look white then to film a white shirt and make it look white.

  9. Nice video! I was able to go at Autumn at Oz this year, and it's quite a fun and vibrant attraction! It was wonderful to see all the visitors dressed up for their visit; love for the Wizard of Oz radiates both from the attraction and the people enjoying it

  10. Thank you for another great video. I've never heard of this place. It's great that parts of it survived. I can't believe that the yellow brick road still looks so good. That's some good quality bricks

  11. I loved wizerd of oz as a child and as adult still do. I live in virginia and never heard of a theme parkland of oz. Till today. I would love to go visit this place and take my grand babys. I know it would take me back to my childhood. Thank you for this video.

  12. What a wonderful story, and I am so glad that the park is back to entrance a whole new generation of youngsters . Excellent job.

  13. Thanks for sharing this with us! Never heard of it even though I lived in North GA at the time it was popular. Looked at the area on Google maps and the yellow brick road is still shining. Wow.
Have fun with your travels with Jackie!

  14. I never knew about this place until my parents bought a house that’s only about 3000 yards from the yellow brick road. Yeah, it’s really that close. Hope to visit there eventually.

  15. Wow just wow! This is flipping kewl! I'm 33 born in 1988, I grew up on wizard of oz, and I mean every offshoot or made for TV movie or Si-Fi shows. Even silent… I would have loved to check this place out it was ahead of it's Time (I want to say even tho it was 1940).. the park was ahead of everything. Watta bummer I missed out, gonna watch it again an go to whichever Carolina it is, do a lil Urban exploration. Wonder if there's any modern video of someone doing that

  16. We need this. If they don’t reopen this ever where it was/is now, Universal or Disney should. Disney owes us after getting rid of the Great Music ride after all! It would fit in at Hollywood Studios and have it’s own land making for some great rides. Coaster called the tornado, character visits, a family boat ride visiting the different scenes, an Omni mover ride going through the witches castle, beauty salon/ Dorothy makeovers, following the yellow brick road for photo ops, etc. If Disney did it, would take 20 years to make but it would be awesome. If Universal did it, it would be done in 3 years but less detail. 🤷‍♀️

  17. Very interesting! Unfortunately I have never heard of this OZ based theme park. I live in the NE and I am only a couple states away. I would have loved to take my daughter there when she was younger to ride the train and see the characters and yellow brick road. Perhaps more investment in advertising would have help along with the proper management of funds.

  18. This park is unnder restoration, and is operational for a few weeks every year. there is also full time security so i wouldn't bother trying to explore it when closed. we just went this year in September its great nostalgic fun!

  19. 1939 movie in colour to help the depressed would lead to the joy a few months later back to depressed because of WW11
