Today i am going to show you how i set up my self watering 5 gallon buckets! I will also discus the soil, plants, water, mulch, etc as well as the do’s an don’t s when setting these up. It’s basically a HOW TO video, an i know it’s kinda long but i did my best 🙂 If you like i will do a video on exactly how i make my soil just comment below!     Why do you need to put the landscaping fabric in? Is that a necessary step? Also, is it absolutely necessary to put landscaping fabric in the nesting pot?

    Tomato cages if you bend the bottoms in at 90 degrees… then fill with soil… the dirt holds alllllll the metal in place allll the way up! Long as you don't get any crazy straight line winds it works quite well…

    Way too much bullshit, simply cut 2" off the bottom of another bucket, drill your weep holes and your fill tube hole and a center hole that a cup fits into tightly. Drop it into your bucket, the taper gives you a tight seal all the way around, cut a disc of landscape fabric exactly the size of the bucket bottom with a hole in the middle 1" smaller than the cup hole, wad up a piece of an old T-shirt and stuff the cup (with holes) all the way to the top and press the cup into the hole tightly making sure the edge of the landscape fabric makes a seal around the cup, add 2" of perlite and fill with soil. You'll never get soil in the reservoir doing it this way, the hole for the fill tube needs to be a tight fit also.

    Your video is very informative and has helped me figure out how to stop roots from plugging up my DWC hydro setup (landscape fabric)?:):) and the false bottom awesome. I use a fabric pot inside of a 5 gal bucket, but it keeps sliding down too far and plugs off the drain. Good work, great video making, camera was kept from moving too much so I watched it to the very end and left a comment.

    All you have to do is hit glue the tubes to the bottom. Thatnwill stop them from moving. Or you can fill the tubes with rocks and put rocks around them. Problem solved

    Just want to add the white buckets are food safe unlike the blue. Will this matter if you change the soil every year idk
