SUMMER AT THE PORTLAND JAPANESE GARDEN

KGW photojournalist Ken McCormick captures the subtlety of light and color at the Portland Japanese Garden in the summer of 2020.

Garden curator Sadafumi Uchiyama and the program director of the garden, Akihito Nakanishi, talk about the experience for visitors as they explore the interplay of light and shadows, warm sun and cool shade, peaceful moments and shared community.

The Portland Japanese Garden is part of the greater Washington Park complex in Portland’s west hills, minutes from downtown. The garden has been curated through its history by world-class artisans and is considered one of the finest and most authentic Japanese gardens outside of Japan.

This video essay is presented to the community as part of a partnership between KGW and the Portland Japanese Garden.

  1. Welp, now you just gave b l m Antie Fa a new target. Those idiots will burn down anything that is wholesome and good.

  2. Glad someone PROTECTED it. What a racket . ..
Very lovely QUIET SAFE area, to keep it that way.
BECAUSE it has value to NORMAL people, and therefore an 'item.'
    I wish I wasn't serious.
God bless and great Strength .

  3. The garden has been for me and so many others, a source of peace, connection to the real world of nature. Reminding me that I am an essential, if not dominant part.
