Want to grow a vegetable garden in Florida? Sunlight is an important factor when vegetable gardening. It’s also one factor you can’t easily change once you’ve started your garden. In this video, Elise Pickett of The Urban Harvest shares exactly how much sunlight you need when growing vegetables in Florida.
SPOILER ALERT: It’s not the same as the rest of the country (the standard 8 hours). Watch the video to see what amount of sunlight is appropriate in Florida and what to do if you do have to grow in shade.

Very informative , thank you!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Great info. I'm starting a garden again after about 20 plus years and have forgotten a Bunch!! I have watched many good garden channels, but could never find one for our specific area. It's nice to re-learn what grows here & when. Thanks!
Hello, Tampa beginner gardener here. Iβve an existing large garden bed box that gets full sun all day till 6pm. I am thinking nothing will survive our FL summers, unless it has shade. What grade of mesh would you suggest for a summer garden? I have seedlings of carrots, beans, green onion, cucumber …again a total neub here. Any shade advise appreciated, I know thereβs different grades but no idea what needed for this zone.
Suggestion, use a photographers' app to track the sun at your location to estimate the amount of sun you will get.
hi what is the tree with the red fruit/vegtable on it behind you?
On one side of my house it gets no sun at all but the ground is clear and I would love to take advantage and grow any edible that could possibly grow there, any suggestions pleaseee?

Thank you for info. I have had to change the way I garden since moving to Florida.
I thought this, and when I asked ifas they told me it was fine to plant with no shade at all π€£ that garden died and I don't ask them questions anymore
Hello i live in port st. Lucie Florida how much do i need for vegetables
Excellent tips!
Lol, Iβm in Deland too. I have a shady back yard. Turns out. Thatβs a good thing. Good vid
Thank you for sharing. I wish I had some of that shade. I face west. Hot sun all day. Poor plant suffer heat exhaustion π©
That is the problem I have with my garden. Not enough light. I'm on a 3rd floor porch with lots of trees in front and I only get like 2 or 3 hours of sun but that's all I have to work with. How can I make this a better situation? Thanksπ
So glad I found this! Iβve gotten the itch to start a veggie garden, but was bummed because my lot is on the east side of my house. Once the sun goes over my house, thatβs it for the day – so about 4-6 hours of sunlight. Good to know us Floridians need less sun time. Subscribed to your channel and looking forward to learning more from you! π
Thank you from south florida! excited to start my backyard and hopefully frontyard (eventually) garden! a little nervous for summertime D:
Hi! Are you growing your plants in 100% mulch? Iβve been in Florida for 3 weeks relocating from Michigan.
The Banyan Trees are really cool. I live just off Boca Grande where there are lots of them.
What is best to do when your background has a fence but full sun all day long in Central Florida?
