Growing Food for the Year | Gardening in Alaska

In the Last Frontier our short growing season requires months of preparation, from starting seeds indoors to cultivating healthy soil to nourish the plants. We plant an entire row of tomatoes in the high tunnel and carry out necessary tasks to ensure we have a successful garden.

We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure ๐Ÿ˜€

  2. In scandinavia we use an oregano called Bergmynte native in scandinavia, more hardy than greek oregano that are more like an annual here

  3. You can test the fence with a long blade of grass. Hold it against the wire at the longest distance from your hand and gradually move closer til it begins to tingle your hand.

  4. Great living.
For all the fishing you do, have you considered making your own fish fertilizer for your garden?

  5. You both are there to do the work full time and go fishing and all. What if you don't mind do you do for finances? I love your life, but need the dollars too.

  6. I would love to see a video of what you guys do for fun in your spare time being so secluded and all. Definitely would be a must watch for me โค๏ธโœ…

  7. Try putting buckets or barrels of water in your Hightower to help with the humidity so stuff doesn't dry out so fast it helps

  8. way too much bending and lifting. i am 66 and believe me it all catches up with you. put a fold down table across that back wall for potting and seedlings.

  9. I did not know that Sandhill Cranes lived in Alaska. We had the big birds in both Tennessee and in Florida where we used to live. Great gardening video!

  10. Do you think you could snow blow the snow right into your high tunnel in the winter to make sure the earth is not dry for spring?

  11. I see you have Sandhill Cranes there you should look into hunting them they are very good eating, we call them ribeye in the sky.

  12. I learn so much watching you two. It's amazing how much you guys put so much love into what you create. I love growing, and grow to much seeds at times as well. Thanks for posting your beautiful work. Hehe

  13. Your garden looks amazing! I can see you put a lot of hard work into it and it really shows in your plants. I wanted to get out in my garden today and plant some cucumbers but it was our first 90+ degree day of the year and I just could not handle the heat. Thank you for sharing your knowledge of gardening with us. I just love to garden but I still have a lot I want to learn. I make garden videos too. I hope we can learn more from each other as we grow our gardens and our channels.

  14. Yay for fresh foods!!! People need to grow their own gardens if they have the land to do it, all throughout the nation, all around the world. ๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ™‚

Share the news: Tell your family, friends, friends of friends to plant a yard garden, to give fresh food plants as gifts, to gift seeds. Fresh food!!! Yummy. ๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿ‘

  16. easy in summer there are 20 hours of sunshine and with a greenhouse and another smaller one inside, you grow all year round

  17. Compost and manure are rich in nitrogen fertilizer and bone meal is rich in phosphorus fertilizer. But plants also need potassium fertilizer. You have lots of it right at your house: wood ash. You may currently dispose of the ash on your compost heap, but when later using the compost, its potassium to nitrogen ratio may not be the optimum ratio for plant growth.

  19. Only a country lady would be caught with a shovel in her hands this day in age, both of you are fantastic and we enjoy your efforts at succeeding!

  20. Eric, every time I see you wear those gloves, I think your hands are bleeding although I am getting use to them by now…..I loved the music you played here….My Mom's rhubarb did quite well through the winter and she always had humungous results so you might have planted them too close together…take care!

  21. Rhubarb has never been a favorite of mine. My Aunt used to grow it and make pies, telling us it taste like strawberryโ€” Not!

  22. Yโ€™all are so inspiring, after I watch a few episodes Iโ€™m out in the yard or garden doing whatever needs doing or processing whatever is ready. โค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธYโ€™all- have loved so much from you kids.โ€

  23. Rhubarb can spread a lot over the years, if it gets established that should be the last rhubarb you ever need to plant!

  24. I see the dogs are exhausted from long hours of being good pups! The hardest job of all on the homestead
