Hey there! I’m trying something new with this group of containers this season.
🎥May, June & July 2022
1. I built the PVC / wire cage to cover a 4×4 foot bed last year (this was the second version). The size of the holes makes it very hard for the cabbage moth (one of my garden arch nemesis) to get in and it also prevents animals from climbing *into* the bed / containers and digging. Keep in mind, it also makes it hard for pollinators to get in too.
2. I moved a couple raised beds this spring and it was easier to use netting to cover the bed so I was left with the cage. Turns out the cage was perfect for some of the containers I’m growing in this year!
3. The cage is SUPER BULKY on the deck (it was a lot easier and not as much of an eye sore on the patio covering a bed. Also, my Batavia Villa build has a bunch of sharp edges (not kid or pet friendly) but I’m sure there is a way to make it a bit safer.
4. Finally, as for the veggies in the containers, there is little to no damage on the plants. The mustards and pac choi in the small slender containers bolted pretty quickly.. The brussel sprout and white kohlrabi plant in their own containers are doing really well! The purple kale and kohlrabi that are planted with other veggies are smaller as they are a bit crowded. And the red cabbage sure is pretty but it has struggled to form a head, I assume because of the heat.
