Do you soak or scarify the nasturtiums before planting? I read to do that but wasn't sure it was necessary

What is Calendula? Is it just a pretty flower or does it have another purpose in the garden? I love how you did the mounds of mulch! Ready to go when the plants are big enough while still giving them room to grow! Such a cool idea!
