Over the past few months, I’ve been going back and forth between my parents’ home (my childhood house) and Michael’s parents’ home. Whenever I would come to my parents’ house, I found myself BEGGING my mom to start a garden. I was itching to grow my own food and take care of plants (I miss my NYC plants 😢 )! I am also the type of daughter who’s constantly trying to improve her parents’ health!

Well, THEY FINALLY DID IT! This is a tour of my mom’s New York backyard container garden. It’s our first time doing this, so we’re not sure if we’re doing everything correctly, but the plants seem to be thriving and we’ve been eating a lot of the food! With a little help from my friend Maria over at Bloom and Grow Radio, we feel like we’re on the right track.

We didn’t have a good place to plant the garden in our backyard (the space was already taken up, and we didn’t want to have to build an enclosure to keep the animals out). Without a fenced in space in the yard, the food would have been eaten pretty quickly. So, instead of creating a gardening bed from scratch, we decided the best place to put the plants was on our back porch in POTS. If you remember from one of my recent videos, a stray cat has taken a liking to my parents. We named her Missy and she basically lives on my parents’ porch. They feed her and brush her and are basically her owners now.

Having Missy is a total game-changer because she protects our entire container garden. She spends most of her time on the porch and keeps other animals away, so thus far we haven’t had any animals eating the veggies!

In this video, I dive into our beautiful vegetable garden tour where you can see that we are growing vegetables like tomatoes, green beans, zucchini, celery, cucumber, romaine lettuce and squash, as well as all kinds of herbs like thyme, basil, parsley, cilantro and more. When our vegetables began to grow and we were able to harvest these fresh organic foods at our house, cooking became so much more fun! I now run out to the garden for some fresh veggies and herbs at lunch and dinnertime, instead of jumping into my car to head to the grocery store!

My brother has also started pickling our cucumbers, so we have homemade pickles now, too! The garden has grown so much since I shot this video, so be sure to follow my Instagram account for more updates as time goes on.

My mom and I love gardening together! It might seem intimidating at first to learn how to grow vegetables at home, especially in containers or pots on your back porch…but the work is so rewarding! And if we’ve realized anything, it’s that this is just a game of trial and error. If something doesn’t work, you can always do it differently next time.

It’s so crazy to see that these beautiful vegetables started out as little seeds that we got for free at Stop & Shop! All that we really needed to invest in to start this garden was some soil and organic compost…and now our garden is thriving and our little veggies are doing great!

  9. Hey Lucie! I love all of your vlogs and you have been such a source of inspiration for me! You always do such an amazing job! Your garden is so adorable and yes it really can be like an experiment sometimes. Especially if you use compost. Lol my boyfriend and I have been gardening and composting together for a while. We actually have a random tomato plant that sprouted from a tomato we must have added to our compost pile. Something about eating food from your own garden makes it so much better tasting. It's that sweet hint of pride in every bite haha. Btw your cat Missy is adorable!! Black cats that come to your house on their own valision are sign of good luck and prosperity!! I found this out because I too have a black cat that came to our house and is now a part of our family.

  10. Where I live (on the Isle of Wight in south England) during lockdown we have created a community called Green Island Veg Economy (G.I.V.E). People leave their spare seedlings, plants and seeds outside their houses on little stations, they post to the Facebook Group when they are available, and folks come and collect them. It's entirely money free and for everyone. The Facebook page has also become a source of learning. The experienced gardeners give advice to the newbies. Literally hundreds of people where I live have transformed their gardens, which were mostly just grass, into amazing productive spaces. It has supported many folks through lockdown and boosted mental and physical health across the island!

  11. I love my little garden too! I love the idea of connecting to the earth and fueling my body with all the fresh produce!

  12. This is amazing growth! Once I get a big deck space (moving soon) this is exactly what I envision!
