Backyard Garden

Fruit Orchard Tour Ep. 4 | Spring Update in the Backyard Garden | Loaded with Young Fruit!

It’s spring and the fruit orchard is really starting to pick up speed. We’re getting all kinds of young fruit starting to grow on the trees and berry plants. The fig trees are a little behind as we’ve had a cooler spring but it’s only a matter of time before we see nice growth out there. This backyard garden is really taking off this year.

  1. Honey-crisp and Golden Delicious apple, the problem is dealing with Cedar Rust. They are too much headache dealing with Cedar Rust. I can deal with Aphids but not Cedar Rust.

  2. Love your espalier row of apple trees. Inspired me to create a dense orchard of fruit tree rows.

  3. I love all your videos!
I have an azalea question, if you don't mind…. When rooting an azalea cutting is it done the same as the rhododendrons?
    Thank you 😊

  4. I went to look for red rhododendrons in March (before most people buy plants) and there were only purple varieties and white. Are the red ones just extremely picked over? Where can I find red ones?

  5. You probably won't see this on an old video, but could you spend some time in an upcoming video discussing your espalier trellis? It looks like a brace at each end and you use strainers to tighten each wire. It looks like there's no horizontal member in your braces, but that makes sense since I'm guessing the two wires aren't putting as much force on the braces as a quarter mile of field fence. That's also why I'm a little confused about what appears to be a 90 corner at the "apple end". I'm guessing that's for a run of fence, not the espalier trellis? Although I'm sure it's largely subjective, I'd also be curious how far off the ground the first wire is and the distance between wires.

Your videos have convinced me to espalier my apple trees, so the trellis just went on the "to do" list for late summer/early fall this year. I really like the way your trellis looks, so any info would be great before I start augering post holes. Thanks!

  6. You have probably said in some previous video, but why do you have such long between the figs? Seems excessive for one not been able to have figs, or are they going to spread that much?

  7. Hey mike . I had a few questions.
Will my raspberry seeds grow without stratification that I collected from the fruit . Can I scratch the surface , soak them and then plant it instead ?

  8. Thanks for all the video you're posting my question is which is the best fertilizer for fig trees

  9. Can u please do a propagation of lucky bamboo cutting n how to use fungicide or root Harmon on lucky bamboo cutting

  10. Ever do much with bleeding hearts? Mine stopped blooming, and started turning a yellow color. I adjusted my water amounts thinking I was over watering. No changes. Suggestions?

  11. Yuban used coffee grinds got my Cherry Seeds sprouting before my Blueberry seeds. 10 days approximately.
    👌 Awesome ☆

  12. Do you have any recommendations on online nurseries? I can't find fruit trees/plants anywhere close!

  13. Absolutely beautiful property mike I love the tours and thank you for bringing us along. Looks so good all freshly mowed!!

  14. @09:50 Apples 🍎 🍏 lower branches don’t produce well. Maybe TILT them about 30º with a small support making a triangle. That will give lower branches more 🌞 & ventilation exposure. GOD I LOVE WATCHING MIKE ‘s VIDEOS. Year after year his YouTube vids are consistently great w BEFORE, AFTER & even after that some time. Great Farmer 👩‍🌾 w a Great family & amazing produce.

  15. @15:50° Mike what in the heck will you do with ALL THOSE FIGS? 😂 my 15 year old Fig produces hundreds maybe thousands of juicy Figs, maybe more! I give tons away but people don’t seem to appreciate the UNSUNG FIG. Gorgeous Figs, they’re beautiful.

  16. @31:05 Did Mike say “Ants”? Ants my granddad a farmer from Southern Italy 🇮🇹 told me,
Ants will kill Fig Trees faster than chopping them down. Gotta get rid of the 🐜🐜 🐜🐜

  17. great work! I'm in the pacific northwest too outside portland in SW washington and I just bought a house and I've been planting it up with negronne figs, tons of rhododendrons, camellias, tons of roses to start! in the fall I'll be working on planting cherry, plum, peach, nectarine, and apricot trees and flower beds. then filling in with blueberries ^_^

  18. Hope you have a few potted figs. Because of your weather looks likes you may not see figs outside for years. Maybe during spring you can start giving them heavy feedings of compost tea mixed with fish fertilizer and comfrey tea. If they don’t get the heat maybe extra food may get them started. I’m in SE PA and it gets down to 5 degs F in winter with lots of snow most years. The fig trees are in their first full season in the ground. My trees died back but not to the ground. I have 18 in ground fig trees. The exotic varieties I put in pots and did the fig shuffle, they all have fruit. I made sure that the ones in the ground are ones noted for surviving our winters. The in ground ones also all have fruit and I pinched them in mid June when they got to 6 ft in height. I prune to 5 to 6 branches per tree. All have at least 20 fruit but this Portuguese dark I got from otbp nursery has over 60. Like I said I have compost teas brewed continuously and feed, feed, feed.

  19. Now that the figs are sprouting from the base, do you prune out last year’s dead branches if there is no apparent new growth? I grow in pots in zone 5b and do the fig shuffle each Spring. Getting harder each year as I age (78 now),and the figs are in larger pots as they grow. Root pruning helps some.
So happy that another figaholic recommended you channel. I always learn so much from your extensive knowledge, that you so readily share with us.

  20. Was so satisfying watching Mike work rather than any of us winging-it in 99° HOT 🥵 HUMID 🥵 temps on the East Coast.
But, his Fig orchard is a WORK of gorgeous FLOWER ART…since Figs aren’t really fruit, but inside-out flowers 🌸.

  21. The Apples trees are beautiful, but if you want great fruit you will need to thin the crop for prime size fruit . Especially thin the lower branches more than the top. However as the tree matures, you can thin less and less.

  22. The next best thing to espallier trees, is hedges. Here in the Central Valley of California, nuts and fruit are hedged for production and convenient harvest.
