Garden Plans

Walls or Fence for the Garden? Clearing Up the Chicken Garden Plans (Day 76)

Friends! Today we step back in time and talk about our original plans for the chicken garden after a throw away comment on Thursday got everyone suggesting to just build a fence instead. Hint – that’s not the plan 🙂
We also start to build & install our main door frame and water glass some eggs!

  1. Callable with my little homestead soon please. Stay warm and safe. Show them how to make your buckets for your bags .

  2. Love the way all doors flow onto each other..it is definitely a work of art

  3. I get why you want a wall and not an ordinary fence. BUT the wall especially with large openings across from each other may intensify the wind. I'm at 3500 feet and while warmer I have the same issues you do. when the wind hits the solid part of the wall it will tend to go up and over, coming down on the other side of the wall with force. PS why do you put the wheelbarrows so far away from the bucket? Like taking two or three steps back and forth carrying the dirt. I'd put it right next to it so I didn't have to take any steps. 😉

  4. Sorry people take things sooo literally! We have the same sense of humor so ignore the silly ones. I am loving your videos!

  5. Dirt bags way too much work. You would have had your homestead built already if you would stop messing with them damn dirt bags, Love you guys.

  6. Your wall will be🙄Have you thought about a dome top? Love your vibe. Can't stop watching the progress, it's better than tv 🥰💞☀️🌬️Ottawa Canada

  7. Johnathon, I think we are ALL a bit sorry you said that!😆 😂🤣😂. I LOVE seeing your vision come to life!!!❤️❤️❤️ my father told us lot's of things he did during the depression as a kid. They used to preserve eggs point down in layers of wood ash in their root cellar.

  8. It will be beautiful……and far more beautiful than my chicken garden, because I don’t have one. Keep up the great work. People are so critical on social media right now. By the way Mrs…..you look so beautiful today. I wish you were my daughter.

  9. You ought to make at least one door, a “Dutch door”. I love Dutch doors.

  10. I thought you may be interested in an idea for your chicken coop, but decided to pull the Post before it caused ofFence

  11. I don't understand, the other day you were having a discussion about whether the wall would be too high and and it would block out too much of the sun and the plants would suffer and not grow well. Now your saying it's more about art and making the area look beautiful and artistic. There must be a middle ground where the wall can be functional and look artistic but not block out too much light and still block strong winds. What if you build up four bags above ground level, build short frames four feet long and two feet high, blacken them for preservation and put hardened glass in the wood, skip a few feet and build another 4 foot frame and do that all the way around the outside then put more bags on top, three or four rows? Then you can adjust the suns intensity by either painting the glass or putting up a matted cloth over it. You may have to put in shorter lengths of glass to accommodate for the curve of the wall.❓❓❓❓❓❓❓

  12. Hello, it is looking awesome! I have looked everywhere, where did you guys buy the Hyperadobe tubing? Steve

  13. I always though about building a hybrid solar array greenhouse. Solar panels would provide shade/power during the summer and heat/power for the winter?

  14. Thanks for the clarification on the wall. It will be a beautiful artistic wall that will not be hurried, not a fence. So one of you, most likely Jet, will begin to learn black smithing, but you know your family, everyone will get curious and interested and eventually most/(all?) of you will be artistic blacksmiths. Then the earthbag wall will be surmounted by a custom hand forged wrought iron wall with trees and fairies and leaves and it will be so beautiful and affect the aesthetic of your buildings and your land forever.
Just wanted you to know that I was listening and I got it. ;P

  15. I love! Seth Godin, so many mindset shifts for challenges. Another reason I find “you” and “your” content delightful!

  16. Keep in mind the areas that might be in shadow in cooler months can be served with sun light reflected off an exposed wall that is painted or coated to reflect the light. Though it is not direct sun light it is of help.

  17. Thank you so much for explaining the reasons you build a solid wall. Your climate is so different from ours here in Germany! It is diffiicult to just imagine a place like that, where plants need protection from the sun. But the way you describe it makes it come alive. You see, I have never been to a desert, and probably never will. So your videos open a window for me, into a strange and interesting world. So don´t let the questions and suggestions bother you. They may sound stupid, interfering or even disrespectful , but they are kindly meant. So many people take an interest in your project, I guess it can become a burden. But it could also make you feel appreciated. Best wishes for your family.

  18. Love the Bob Ross T-shirt. I did one picture following him. Not easy as it looks. But another one coming. lol. Anyway, got off track….The wall will look great!! I am enjoying your videos so much. I need to become a Tiny shiny Homie!! Thank you guys…you are my stress reliever!

  19. It was a fence it would be done already. I understand why you're doing this because you want something beautiful with a good ambience but still they're just chickens and it's just a garden you could have went with a fence.. LOL

  20. This is beautiful!!! I love that it’s artwork and that you have that viewpoint. I can’t wait to see the end result. 😍 Also, you have gotten SO much tanner than when you started, ma’am. ❤️

  21. Love your garden plans. Egg preservation video very interesting, had forgotten about that technique. In my experience with deer (70 yrs old, lived in both WI and MN), deer will jump a 6-7' fence here, but your deer in AZ are generally much smaller. With your wall being 16" wide, it represents a larger width than most fences, plus it encompasses another wall build within too short of a range for a deer to successfully launch another jump. Deer are smart and will not attempt a jump like that. The idea of building a fence on top of the wall is interesting but in my guess, something like that would be overprotection. I deem it extremely unlikely that any deer will ever jump your wall, even if you built it much shorter.

  22. My whole family is pretty artistic, and while I’m not as good of an artist as my cousin is, I worked for a general contractor building custom homes for 2 years, and I LOVED it!! You phrased it perfectly, it’s an art piece that you get to live in. I can’t WAIT to see your house build start!!! 😁👏🏻❤️

  23. All artists have dips🤠 I've been noticing the last few videos. You all are dipping 😁🌵🌵🌾🌵🌾 One day at a time☯️

  24. Wow really good content and music 🎶🎵, even Mother Nature ☁️🌞 chimed in❣❣ The Clouds rocked! I felt engaged and you set a great mood. Your opening g chat was heartwarming❣🌻

  25. After watching many 😁 of your videos… all I can say is, you all are giving it all you got❣ I can tell you spent alot off time putting all the content together. Truly shows the artistic tenacity present in your entire family. Great video❣🏜
