  1. Hello there can u talk about how n when to plant the chayote please ! n also how do I call u ( your name )

  2. I am really excited to attempt sweet potatoes here in the PNW – Willamette Valley, zone 8b. We definitely don't get deluge summers like you do, so I will be mulching like nuts to maintain moisture levels (also trying to start my Back to Eden garden to help with moisture retention and soil quality).

The one thing I can't find around here though, is that Okinawa variety! I would love to wow my family with it, but I'm hesitant to spend $25 on three tubers listed online, as I've read some people got really poor quality or damaged stuff, and the vendors are less than ethical folks. Do you have a suggested vendor? Or could you sell me a few? Lol

  3. That's NOT a food grade plastic that they're sitting and growing in which means the chemicals of the plastic are leaching into that soil. that's a big no no

  4. I heard that some sweet potatoes only produce on the spot the slips were planted? When they vine they don’t produce where the vines root?

  5. I failed to grow slips from bought potato, obviously not organic but will try again next year. I bought a potato plant at £6.99p, so I have the most expensive crop which I havent harvested yet. I still enjoyed growing this for the first time, I didnt think of doing cuttings. Morning glory. I learnt something new.

  6. Here in far north tropical Queensland Australia, have grown mainly the orange sweet potato common here in shops, and the purple skinned, white fleshed variety loved by Maori folk of New Zealand. The first has heart shaped leaves, and the new shoots and soft new leaves are great stir fried or boiled. The purple one has kind of palmate pointed lobed leaves, and its leaves are bitter and i never eat them.

  7. Dear Dale, you did a fine job describing the best way to propagate sweet potatoes. You explain everything in a clear and concise manner. For those new to gardening, the dvil is in the detail. Thanks for making those detail interesting and fun to learn. Best Rob

  8. I don’t think it’s a tuber potato is a tuber a modified underground stem sweet potatoes or modified roots corm? Rizhome?

  9. Hi Millinial Gardener
I am from Kingston Jamaican…. I plant my sweets potato and it spread all over my garden …after 5 months I dug up but didn’t see any potato under the ground …. I chop out all the vines but I saw a lot of potato slips growing all over again the more I root out the more it grow ..
Can you tell me where I went wrong.

  10. @themillennialgardener
How long can you leave a Sweet Potato in water producing Slips?
My Dog would eat Sweet Potatoes….She passed unexpectedly and we had 1 Sweet Potato sit on the Counter in the shade for almost 3 months.
We put it upright in water and it started growing roots and green leaves immediately (in the kitchen greenhouse window) it's been 2 or 3 weeks now.

  11. Do these slips give the same amount of sweet potatoes as planting a quarter of a sweet potato as my slip.
As off my normal slip ( I usually plant about a quarter of a sweet potato) I get about 10 sweet potatoes, around about 5 pounds of sweet potato per slip each planting. I have almost unlimited space ( many acres) so thinking maybe I plant thousands of these cuttings.

  12. Sweet potato is one of my favorite root crops. I'll try to plant sweet potato with your method. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

  13. They had a sale on Sweet potato today I got 4 Pounds for $2 ,I'm going to try to start growing slips from the ends.

  14. What kind of soul should be used? I planted slips in pro mix and miracle grow soil. Didn't know about the 5-5-5 and bone meal. Grew lots of vine but not a single sweet potato harvested. Toronto area. What went wrong?

  15. I've read that store bought sweet potatoes are sprayed with chemicals that prevent rooting to help them store for longer, this may be why the store bought ones took so much longer than the one you saved from your garden.

  16. Thank you for being so thorough about this lesson! Very informative and look forward to trying this out. 🙂

  17. I find the okinawa sweet potatoes usually do not produce slips. I read they are irradiated and thus will cause it to not produce slips. However, if you get them from a farmers market or organic versions then that will work. I ended up ordering the slips from a seller in florida and have been growing them since. I keep a few plants in water during the winter and plant it out again in the spring. About 6/10 of the plants makes it through the winter.

  18. I have slips coming in from a white sweet potato , I live in California zone9a should I plant inside & plant outside next spring?
