Garden Ninja shares his tips for designing privacy in an overlooked back garden. Privacy is essential in any residential garden, but achieving it can be difficult. Whilst it would be lovely to move your house to an open field, the practicalities often mean you have to work with rather than against neighbours. It’s about achieving the ‘feeling’ of privacy rather than the ‘absolute’ privacy of 8ft high walls.

A better method is to use planting and structures to block or restrict certain viewpoints. It’s about breaking the line of sight rather than blocking it out completely. In this garden we have used standard trees, suited to the soil type and slight shade to help diffuse the views from neighbouring gardens. They also give a real structure to the small space drawing your eyes inwards rather than outwards over the low fences.

Does anyone know what the purple tree is? 😍😍 xx
Great, helpful video but a little shaky on some shots.
Nice one Ninja…
Really nice and tasteful redesign, and the way you talked through it was brilliant. I'm just about to make a career change and watching things like this is so valuable. Keep up the good work!
Great videos, keep up the great work!!
Just subscribed! Have a small garden too and want to incorporate trees for privacy but I've been having a hard time finding trees small enough. What are the names of the trees you used here?
Dude your hair…really?
Lee, great video….what trees did you use throughout please? Will they grow massive?
Great vid! Just curious though, how did this cost from start to finish? Its about the same size as my garden
Absolutely brilliant video, has given me great ideas for a shady part of my garden , and I love the idea of combining different textures , shades of green shrubs : thank you 💕
Any chance for a follow-up video on this design to get a look after it's more established?
I think the garden looks fantastic! You have done a truly great job. Hello from Australia.
another great episode .. My back garden is literally exactly to this scale. It gets sun for 6 hours a day, but awful London clay conditions .. I dug the entire garden up by hand and have spent a year bedding down much better soil / compost …. Finally got rid of x2 – 30 foot conifers which have been taking all the water from the garden with their 20 metre roots all the way to the house 🙁 …….. 2nd year gardener and all I do is watch YouTube every night for ideas, tips and a reet good education. Thank you Ninja
Great video loved it!
Absolutely stunning!! Thank you for sharing your talents with us!!
Wow the garden looks so much bigger and very nice. Please do a Mediterranean garden design. Love your videos.
I missed the types of trees he used. Anyone know what they are? Thanks!!!
This is absolutely genius! Thank you so much! Xx
Such talent😊
Love your design!!! Looks amazing! What trees did you plant?
This has given me lots of ideas, thank you so much xx
brilliant
Hi, I like ur design for small garden my query is my backyard is on a slope and I’m planning to do a kitchen garden please help
I am a pro garden designer, and I find that I can't get enough tips on small gardens. Thanks much, Lee, keep em coming!
The shed was loads better turned round so it's side looked like the fence. A really good idea to deal with a footpath through the centre by making a round lawn to take it in. I bet the owners love it!
What was the name of that tree with purple leaves at 3.13 in? Cheers
Repetition in a small space helps with creating a cohesive look. Much more pleasing to the eye in my opinion. I also appreciate that everyone has their own taste. You did a fantastic job. Love it.
Really lovely…finally a proper garden design fed up of seeing slab and astroturf labelled 'garden design '. I would have painted the shed dark to knock it back and have some climbers up the side of the shed and the dodgy fence panels.
I love your designs. Thank you for sharing and for the tips you provide.
One thing that I particularly like is when you put pictures of the plant when is mature, on the side of the screen, when you talk about a plant, at the same time that you are showing us the actual plant. That way, we don't have to imagine too much what it will look like. As when they are put down, they don't always look as they will in the future.
Have you thought of having a video to show us what plants work well with what others? In terms of sun, soil, scent, colour and pattern?
Also, I struggle with the all year round interest. I would like colour all year round…
Thanks again
I'd watch your videos, but your hair is so bizarre and distracting, I just skip over them. Just my opinion…
Great changing! You did such a beatuful job congratulations!
I love this garden and the planting. Thanks for the tips.
Hi can you help with a query please . I have found this on my hydrangea it’s a soft while mildew looking powder ? Can’t attach a photo ?? Amanda
So helpful 👍🏼x
The shed needs a window or the look of a window!
Brilliant!
