The single chopstick – aka soil aerator and analog moisture meter. I keep at least one chopstick for every 3-4 plants I have. The free ones you get from Asian takeout can be used but they break down over time so I prefer to use the more permanent kind. How to aerate soil: gently poke the soil a couple times before you water; it doesn’t have to be every time you water (note: this only applies to tropical foliage plants who like “airy” soil; I don’t do this for succulents/cacti). Analog moisture meter: as you aerate, if soil sticks to the chopstick, then it is still moist
