New York Rangers News

In the midst of a career renaissance with the New York Rangers, Tye Kartye flies to Seattle with his teammates Friday to begin a four-game road trip Saturday against the Kraken. Yes, the very same Kraken who placed Kartye on waivers last season, allowing Rangers general manager Chris Drury to make one of his best moves yet.

Since the Rangers claimed Kartye off waivers on March 1, the 25-year-old forward recorded 26 points (10 goals, 16 assists) in 41 games, not to mention sent repeated jolts of electricity through the lineup with his tenacious two-way play. That’s about a 52-point pace over a full season. Not bad for an undrafted player that never recorded more than 22 points in any one single season.

But it gets better, A gritty bottom-six forward morphed into a top-six regular this season, partly due to his excellent chemistry with Rangers captain J.T. Miller. Those two were at their wrecking-ball best Thursday against the Philadelphia Flyers, especially in the first period when it appeared that duo won pretty much every puck battle. Their diligent forecheck led directly to the game-opening goal, when Miller’s shot glanced off Gabe Perreault and into the net at 4:39.

Then in the third period, Kartye blew the roof off Madison Square Garden with a breakaways goal that put the Rangers up 3-2.

“Right before we scored one of the goals, [Will Cuylle] said to me on the bench ‘the crowd’s getting loud.’ I said, ‘Yeah, we’ve got to score. It’d be pretty cool.’” Kartye recounted postgame.

Kartye now has 12 points in 17 games this season. each recorded at even strength, second most on the team. He’s also tied for third on the Rangers with five goals. And don’t think for a second that he forgot who he truly is at his core: Kartye is second on the Rangers with 46 hits.

“He works at his game every day. He’s a relentless worker. He’s just a great teammate,” coach Mike Sullivan said Thursday. I think. Ever since we’ve picked him up and he joined our team, he’s just fit in with our group. I think he’s getting better and better.

“This guy’s on a 60-plus point pace since he’s become a Ranger. And he brings so many intangibles. He’s good on the penalty kill, his puck pursuit game, he skates, he hunts pucks, and he’s conscientious defensively. He’s been a great fit for our group. I think he thrives in the game that we’re trying to play, but I couldn’t be happier for him.”

HIs coach loves him, His teammates love him. The Garden Faithful loves him.

The Kraken surely can’t love the fact that they lost Kartye for nothing, and will get to re-live that decision up close and personal Saturday night.
