Gorgeous colors across the spectrum illuminate equally impressive foliage and plants at a new festival in Gresham.
Visitors to the Gresham Japanese Garden, in Main City Park, are in for an ethereal delight over the next two weeks. Volunteers have set up a system of lights across Tsuru Island that makes for a magical experience.
There are plenty of special things to discover. One tree is illuminated next to a filled pond, creating a stunning reflection. The back grove has lights stretching all the way up to the canopy. Throughout the park stand bamboo lights created by the volunteers.
The Autumn Illumination at Tsuru Island runs from sunset to 10 p.m. through Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Japanese Garden, 219 S. Main Ave. The illumination is free to attend.
All of the lights were strategically placed to highlight the garden’s iconic foliage, with extra attention paid to the season’s changing leaves.
“We have become a true Oregon destination,” said Jim Card, garden director. “More people are realizing how special Gresham and this Japanese Garden are.”
The event transforms Tsuru Island and showcases the beauty that can be found after dusk. It was inspired by the Yozakura Cherry Blossom Festival, a similar can’t-miss outing hosted by the Friends of the Japanese Garden in the spring. That event lights up the dozen Akebono cherry trees and their blossoms.
Friends of the Gresham Japanese Garden is a volunteer nonprofit organization that maintains Tsuru Island and the other surrounding garden spaces.
