David White, 38, was arrested after neighbors reported witnessing the attack, according to preliminary court records and WXIN. Authorities identified the victims as White’s 75-year-old mother and his 80-year-old stepfather, Robert Jay Pottle Jr.
Witnesses told police White was “trying to decapitate his stepfather by chopping at his neck with a shovel,” and then stabbed him with a kitchen knife after the man tried to take the shovel away, WXIN reported. White’s mother was found dead in the driveway near bloody garden shears, authorities said.
Police said White went inside the home and removed his clothing before officers arrived. He surrendered without incident.
White remained in the Marion County Jail as prosecutors prepared a formal case filing. He was expected to make his first court appearance Wednesday. Court records indicated he had not yet entered a plea.
