Hello everyone, I have really bad windows and I'm not ready to go PVC. I am thinking of using a putty knife and maybe sandpaper to remove the old paint. How can I best go about this?

Maybe I am wrong. But it looks like you’ve got more to do than painting.

It’s a cheap solution but if you’re lucky and the wood is intact you can make an okay-job (will last 2/5 years based on the weather).
A better solution is to take out the windows, scrape the surface, sand it and then paint with also an impregnating agent. I also use silicone before winter on all the outer side of the frames.
Source: i have multiple ancient windows and doors. I also have done a lot of restaurations
