NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — It’s Hispanic and Latin American Heritage Month, and we’re continuing our celebration of the many historical and cultural contributions of Latino Americans on “Tiempo.”
We will highlight our good friends at Goya who are celebrating a major milestone: 90 years. Goya’s story began in New York City in 1936 when it was founded by Spanish immigrants. Over the last nine decades, the small family business has grown alongside the Hispanic and Latino communities in New York and beyond.
We’ll take a look at the company’s history and legacy. We’ll also highlight their initiatives focused on hunger relief, education, culture and community support.
We’ll pivot to New Jersey, where the Borinqueneers, 65th Army Infantry got a commemorative Garden State license plate. New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill just signed the new law to honor the soldiers.
The Borinqueneers military service was an iconic unit composed predominantly of Puerto Rican soldiers. And they fought in some of the nation’s major conflicts.
The new license plate will bear the words “The Borinqueneers.” Proceeds from the plates will support programs benefiting the U.S. Army veterans.
New Jersey state Sen. M. Teresa Ruiz joins the show this week. She was one of the sponsors of the law creating a dedicated Borinqueneers license plate.
