When Sally’s husband suffered a stroke four years ago and began using a wheelchair, she decided to transform their Manunda backyard into a tropical oasis he could enjoy.

The 900-square-metre block now features a circular succulent garden, five small ponds, a fairy garden and a lush array of tropical plants. At the back, a fire pit sits beside a running creek, where the couple settle in to watch some “bush TV”.

“The thing that makes it most special to me is that my husband can go outside and be in nature, feel like he’s camping next to a running creek and fire pit, without having to leave home.”

Sally says the garden was a labour of love, and her husband wasn’t the only one who benefited.

“I made it for my husband, but it also served as therapy for me at a very difficult time in our lives.”
