Hi all, had a squash-pocalypse this year with this variety. I hardened a few on the vine to a butternut tan but cut these off today (on my neighbors property and needed to clear em off) and am wondering if they’ll keep turning to tan off the vine? Otherwise I guess they can be composted. Thank you!

  1. Cut them up and freeze them? You can eat them green as a zucchini substitute.

They won’t mature off the vine.

  2. CitrusBelt

Yeah they need to be fully ripe to store. I will say that the ripe ones kept surprisingly well in the garage (basements and root cellars aren’t a thing where I am)….those things held up for like four months in the garage, which gets up into the low 80s during the day even in my “winter” weather.

Anyways, if you have a bunch that need getting rid of, apparently chickens are very fond of them (either green or ripe). I probably got about two hundred pounds of the damn things (from two plants!) the year that I grew them & they were basically impossible to give away for human food….but there’s a lady down the street who keeps quite a few chickens, and she was willing to take all that I could give her. She sent me a video of her birds going after a large one & they just *demolished* it.

Might be worth offering out if you know someone with chickens (or possibly goats?).
