A customer at work asked me if I wanted some jalapeños and proceeded to hand me an entire plant. The plant looks wilted, but recent breaks show the branches are still green, no leaves look dead yet.
The roots are dry but not crumbling.
I’d like to try and save the poor thing!

Yea I’d say likely. But stop looking at it and put that in moist soil ASAP! Most of the root system is missing, so you will be doing a lot of work to revive it I think. Or you could plant some seeds.
Put that poor bugger in some water or at least damp paper towels around the roots until you can get it in some wet soil
I think you need a better root system when you pull the plant for overwintering. Pour one out for the homie.
Echoing what everyone else has said, that root system is butchered. So, low chance of survival. But if you have a pot and some dirt….

Very unlikely. I’d probably try anyway, because I’m a crazy person. But I would expect to be disappointed. Those roots are pretty violently torn out.
When I read the title I thought to myself, “great, now people are picking up plants from the side of the road like puppies or kittens”
Yes it can be saved and likely will do well if it’s still warm, give it plenty of sun and water the soil well initially during planting.
I don’t know about the plant– but I can almost hear the purring from this image.
Why would someone hand you a plant 🤣
