I am SO over this heat and ready for fall and winter that I have officially started changing things over at my house. I already put away my floral patio pillows, I’m ready to bring out the fall ones, and I plan on putting warm white sparkle trees all over my yard once we get closer to winter. I want cozy. I want twinkle lights. I want to walk outside and feel like I live in a tiny Christmas village.
And apparently my backyard birds are getting in on this too, because Anthropologie has a Bird Seed Cottage that is basically adorable little bird real estate covered in snacks. The handmade wooden birdhouse is decorated with bird seed, nuts and dried fruit, so the birds can stop by for dinner and eventually move into the building they just ate. The housing market is weird for everybody right now.

The cottage measures 9.5 inches high, 5.5 inches wide and 8 inches long, and each one is decorated by hand, so no two should look exactly alike. The base is made from exterior grade wood, and Anthropologie recommends keeping it sealed somewhere cool and dry until you’re ready to put it outside.

Once it’s out there, the company recommends hanging or mounting the cottage in a secluded spot about 6 to 10 feet above the ground. Since most birds would probably prefer their entire house not whipping around every time the wind blows, mounting it somewhere stable makes sense. Anthropologie also recommends choosing an area protected from rain for the best results.

The really cute part comes after your backyard visitors eat the bird seed, nuts, and dried fruit decorating the outside. What’s left is a sturdy wooden house that can become a little backyard home for feathered friends.

I already spend an embarrassing amount of time feeding the birds in my yard, so naturally now I’m looking at this thinking they need property too. They have food. They have water. Soon, they’ll apparently have a cottage.
Meanwhile, I am the one buying everything.
If I hang one of these and a chickadee moves in after eating the roof, I expect rent. I am willing to accept payment in the form of sitting somewhere cute while I drink my coffee.
