Lee Rolland spends most of her days gardening at her North Kildonan home and there is nothing she loves more than sharing the fruits of her labours with others.
The retiree is thrilled her garden was recently chosen for this year’s city-wide Friends of the Assiniboine Park Conservatory garden tour.
“I’m in the garden all day during the summer and I love it,” she said, noting she loves hearing the feedback and advice of other gardeners and answering questions from those whose thumbs aren’t quite as green.

Rolland’s garden is one of 46 that will be featured on this year’s tour, the first year the society has partnered with garden clubs across the city.
The tour will begin June 30 in Transcona and wrap up Aug. 14 in East Kildonan. It will stop in southwest Winnipeg on July 7, West Kildonan on July 14, Charleswood on July 21, and St. Vital on July 28.
Valerie Denesiuk of the East Kildonan Garden Club said she takes a lot of pride in the fact that this year’s will begin and end in northeast Winnipeg.
“This is a huge tour and it starts with the best and finishes with the best,” she said with a laugh. “It’s a really wonderful way to showcase the beauty of our neighbourhoods.”
Denesiuk said the tour is a must for gardeners and anyone interested in starting a garden. The wealth of information participants have access to is invaluable, she said.
“You get so many ideas and you get to see how other gardeners are tackling situations you face in your garden, like what to plant under a tree,” she said.
“With the weather we’ve had for the past two years, you can also see which plants are able to make it.”
