People are being advised to book up early to avoid disappointment, as a North East garden centre announces plans for its ‘best ever’ Christmas, including a magical North Pole Village with its own Santa’s Grotto.

There’s been a slight chill in the air of late, which, given we’ve become rather accustomed to sweltering temperatures in the high 20s, has been a bit of a wake up call and a reminder that 2026 is flying by at lightning speed. Schools will go back for a new term in less than two weeks time and, while we don’t want to wish any time away, you can be sure it won’t be long before Christmas goods start to appear on the shelves of many shops across the region.

Over the summer we’ve done stories on all manner of festive events, including the dates for both Newcastle Christmas Market 2026 and the annual LIghts Switch On and the sold out success of the always popular Christmas trail at Whitehouse Farm in Northumberland. And, next out of the traps with their seasonal line-up is Dobbie’s, the garden centre on the outskirts of Gateshead that is busy all year round, but proves particularly popular with families in the run up to Santa coming.

The centre piece of the Birtley garden centre’s plans for Christmas 2026 is the Santa’s Grotto, which will take children on a magical journey through a North POle Village to meet Santa Claus, taking part in activities and grotto games along the way.

Each family will have the chance to enjoy time with Santa to share their Christmas wishes and every child will receive a special collectible penguin soft toy in a presentation bag to take home as a memento. TIckets for the Grotto experience, which launches on November 22 and runs right through until Christmas Eve, are already on sale, starting at £$!5 per child.

Families can also share a magical morning in the Dobbies’ Birtley restaurant at Santa’s Breakfast. Enjoy a visit from Santa, games, activities and a mini tree-decorating activity, all over a delicious family breakfast.

Children will also receive a special gift from Santa, making it a memorable Christmas treat for the whole family. The Santa’s Breakfast experience starts on November 28 and runs until Christmas Eve, with tickets £16.50 per child and from £9 per adult.
