Formally part of the highly popular Living Lightly series this much anticipated event promises to teach residents how to transform their private outdoor areas and gardens into bustling, biodiverse sanctuaries for local wildlife.
Delivered by environmental educator Harriet Pellizzer in partnership with the Bass Coast Shire Council, the workshop will be held on Saturday, September 19 from 10am to 11.30 am at the community-focused Wonthaggi Harvest Community Garden.
As local gardens burst into life, the Wonthaggi Harvest Community Garden is preparing to host a special workshop on September 19 to help residents transform their backyards and balconies into thriving, biodiverse sanctuaries.
The primary focus of the workshop will be to demonstrate how even minor adjustments to a residential backyard can dramatically boost local biodiversity. Attendees will explore how various layers of habitat, combining specific plant choices with reliable water sources and natural shelter can work dynamically to provide the critical resources that native fauna require all year round.
“Create a garden with wildlife in mind and discover how even small changes can help support local biodiversity,” the event organisers have promised emphasising that the workshop is tailored to be highly inclusive.
Whether managing a sprawling rural property, a suburban backyard, a compact courtyard, or a small balcony, participants will receive tailored strategies for properties of all shapes and sizes.

Pellizzer will guide the group through the fundamentals of selecting native plant species that offer optimal food and protection. The session will also highlight the environmental value of utilising raw garden features that are often cleared away, such as logs, fallen rocks, leaf litter, and existing dense shrubbery, which act as vital microhabitats for insects, reptiles, and small mammals.
Beyond the design basics, the workshop will address the common challenges urban wildlife face, such as habitat fragmentation and the loss of natural corridors. By linking residential gardens together through native planting, local residents can create a collective safety net for local birds, bees, and marsupials moving through the township.
With interest in sustainable living continuing to grow across the Bass Coast, organisers are urging community members to secure their spots early. The event is free to attend, but registration is essential due to limited capacity at the garden.
Securing a spot early ensures that coordinators can maintain direct contact if any schedule changes occur. Early booking also guarantees that adequate learning materials are prepared for every attendee on the day.
Participants are encouraged to bring a notepad, a hat, and plenty of questions for the interactive Q&A session at the conclusion of the workshop.
Whether you want to welcome more biodiversity into your backyard or protect your current crop without harming local fauna, this event provides the essential tools to garden sustainably.
Registration and ticketing details are available online. To secure your place at the workshop, visit the official event page at thecap.com.au/living-lightly-bass-coast.
