CEMETERY STORM CLEANUP SLATED FOR THURSDAY
The William Henry Harrison chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is looking for volunteers to help with storm-related cleanup from 8 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Chesterton Cemetery on Porter Avenue, west of Ind. 49. Work includes picking up branches and cleaning up lawn and tree debris from the Aug. 11 derecho. The weather-dependent cleanup also is scheduled for Sept. 17. Volunteers should bring bottled water, gloves, and whatever equipment they have, including tarps, rakes, chain saws, trimmers and leaf blowers. For questions, email diane1224@comcast.net.
IVY TECH HOSTS ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP EVENT
Ivy Tech Community College will host its annual Chancellors’ Scholarship Event on Sept. 17 at Avalon Manor Banquet Center, 3550 E. Lincoln Highway, Merrillville. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The event includes dinner, presentation of this year’s scholarship recipients and recognition of the James W. and Betty Dye Foundation, which has been named the 2026 Benefactor of the Year. Tickets are available for purchase for $100 per person. Of the ticket price, $50 is tax-deductible. Tickets may be purchased through the Chancellors’ Scholarship Event link through Thursday. Proceeds from the event will benefit students at Ivy Tech’s Lake County and Valparaiso campuses. FRANCISCAN HEALTH, SCHERERVILLE PARTNER FOR HEALTH SERIES
Franciscan Health is partnering with the Schererville Parks and Recreation Department to provide a free Fall Health Series. The weekly programs will begin with a health education session presented by Franciscan, followed by a light group walk or other physical activity. The events will take place at 9:30 a.m. on six Fridays beginning Friday and running through Oct. 23 at the Schererville Community Center, 500 E. Joliet St. There will be no class on Friday, Sept. 18. Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes. The sessions are planned to take place outdoors, but in the event of inclement weather, will move indoors. VALPARAISO HOSTS NEIGHBORHOOD WORKSHOP
The city of Valparaiso invites the community to an informative Neighborhood Workshop, “Mastering Meetings,” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Sept. 30 at Valparaiso City Hall, 166 Lincolnway. Presented by Mitch Isaacs, president of Shafer Leadership Academy in Muncie, the session will offer practical strategies for running productive meetings, engaging participants and moving groups from discussion to action. This workshop is for residents leading a neighborhood association, serving on a community group or for those who simply want to make their meetings more effective. The city has partnered with Shafer Leadership Academy to offer free, virtual leadership courses to residents.
