“Is that supposed to be our yard?” My husband was stunned. So was I. With a photo of an area we wanted to redo and some carefully crafted prompts, we asked an AI for a designer’s planting plan and it spit out a photorealistic rendering, bloom calendar, and plant quantities in minutes. From there, we eventually had a plan that came very close to the vision in our heads. Yet it was hardly smooth sailing to get there.

What inspired the experiment? Our north-facing backyard lawn has always struggled. With the kids grown and house repairs pending, I was ready for change. While I’m trained in landscape design and have worked in nurseries for nearly a decade, when you’ve lived in a place for years, you stop seeing alternatives. I needed to visualize the possibilities in my own backyard. Enter ChatGPT, with an assist from Claude.

Crafting the Right Prompts

I settled on ChatGPT to create realistic renderings, and employed Claude (which can’t generate such renderings) as my AI coach and translator. Full disclosure: OpenAI provided a Plus account for the purposes of this article. I subscribe to Claude independently.

An OpenAI representative said, “Think of ChatGPT as a creative brainstorming tool for garden and outdoor design. It can help you gather ideas, compare options, and think through what might work in your space. Where it can be especially helpful is in moving the creative process from ideation to a more concrete action plan.” 

Claude told me specificity in prompting is essential. Include dimensions, growing conditions from soil to sun exposure, desired style, and goals. Instead of “add a water feature,” say, “a 5-foot, naturalistic pond with Cor-ten steel edging, near the patio, visible from both ground level and the deck above.” Instead of “lush plantings,” try “layered woodland edge in generous drifts of no more than six species, 75-80% Pacific Northwest native.”

I included the photograph shown above, and Claude wrote a long, detailed prompt. The first result, Claude and I agreed, was a theme-park jumble. Both details and plants felt generic, overly fussy, and undifferentiated rather than intentional and cohesive.

Honing the Vision

Several iterations later, a vision emerged. From our patio, a path takes you through naturalistic plantings under an arch that would act as a threshold to a vine maple against the far fence. There, you find a hangout space with a barrel sauna, Adirondack chairs, and a fire pit.

Key enhancements: the arch and its placement, a focal point to draw you across the garden, curving paths to make the narrow space feel wider, hiding some features for mystery, and adding bold foliage for contrast, were my additions. These are garden designer tricks for elevating your experience immeasurably.

Refining the Results

There were plenty of hiccups before this vision materialized, however. Without warning, decks migrated or disappeared, and spatial intelligence was a constant challenge. I was going for rectangle pavers, placed horizontally in a zig-zag pattern that it never got exactly.

But there were wonderful surprises, too. When I asked for a plant list, what came back resembled a professional design document, bloom calendar, zone diagrams, hardscape reference photos included.

In the first try, ChatGPT labeled my deck as a plant. By the second draft, without any correction, it was fixed. Even so, in the final version, a Ligularia dentata was mislabeled, and Carex testacea listed as fall color only, when that rusty orange foliage persists year-round in the Pacific Northwest.

Tips for Using AI for Garden Design

Dozens of iterations later, I called my husband over. The garden glowing back at us—pond, arch, vine maple, sauna tucked in the corner—was nearly unrecognizable. It crystalized so many dreams. Here are 5 things I learned from this process to get the best results from AI:

Give it everything upfront. Vague requests produce vague results. It’s a little like picking wishes for a genie; be careful what you wish for. Upload your photo with the instruction, “Use the uploaded photo as a spatial and architectural reference.” Without it, the AI invents a new backdrop.

Treat it as a conversation, not a command. Watch for inconsistencies. You may need to repeat directions, even re-upload reminder photos. 

Bring your own design thinking. Notice how the images differ from real-world gardens that you love. Consider how you want to use the space. Will that patio be too sunny for late afternoon conversation?  

Verify everything. The AI kept resurrecting plants I’d specifically excluded. Check not only what’s in the plan line-by-line, but confirm structural elements, scale and measurements, and the suitability of plants for your garden conditions. AI hallucinates confidently and regularly, so double-check before building or buying plants.

This is a starting point, not a finished plan. When you have something that captures the feeling you’re after, take it to a professional designer to start your conversation. According to OpenAI, “…gardening is intensely local and depends on many factors that can’t always be captured in a prompt, so it’s still helpful to verify suggestions with local professionals.”

Final Thoughts

Working with AI on my garden was thrilling, but it didn’t give me the perfect design. As OpenAI explains, “ChatGPT cannot physically assess your site…it doesn’t have insight into day-to-day shifts like how compacted the soil is, noticing a subtle drainage problem after a storm, or understanding every microclimate in the way an experienced local professional can.”

What AI did help me figure out was what garden I wanted to design. Each iteration helped me clarify my vision through the friction of describing it, rejecting it, and refining it. By the end I had a design vocabulary, a plant list, a spatial concept, and compelling images I could take to a professional.
