When gardening experienced a surge in 2020 and 2021, more people than ever sought gardening knowledge – whether growing food, ornamental plants, or a window full of houseplants. The recent interest in gardening remains strong. In response to increased requests for gardening information, OSU Extension has produced a series of free gardening talks – the Growing Oregon Gardeners “Level Up” series.
2025 will be the fifth year of this popular series, which is offered as a live webinar and recorded for easy access on demand. Curated by Master Gardener coordinators across Oregon, the series covers a wide range of gardening topics. There are crop specific sessions, for example covering dahlias, mushrooms, roses, and vegetables. There are multiple sessions dedicated to soil, fertility, and water. Also covered are technique-based topics like composting, growing hydroponically, pest control, and succession planning.
In 2024, the series focused on food crops and included everything from veggies to fruit trees to culinary herbs. Several sessions covered the topic of community gardening. A session on growing produce to share with local food banks featured Courtney Nichols, the operations manager of the Klamath-Lake Food Bank.
The 2025 sessions are designed to help gardeners adapt their practices and plant choices to our changing climate.
Winter is a time when many gardeners are dreaming and planning their gardens of the future. It can also be a great time to build gardening skills and knowledge. There are now four years’ worth of free gardening videos, specific to Oregon, available to all. For those interested in college-level gardening training and a robust volunteer experience, information about Klamath County’s Master Gardener program can also be accessed from that page. The Master Gardener program is accepting applications through early January.
