MINOT, N.D. (KMOT) – Garden growers said it’s peak season for summer crops in North Dakota.
Angelic Gardens is home to the experience of picking fresh fruits and veggies right from the garden to bring to your kitchen table.
Like many growers, Angy Edison faced some challenges with the dry start to spring, then, suddenly, heavy rainfall in July.
“It was a blessing to have a lot of rain. It really was,” said Edison.
Some called it a million-dollar rain. And as much as the rain helped crops grow, so did the weeds.
“We don’t use herbicides, pesticides, those kinds of things to control that. We will run a tractor between the rows, but all of the weeding is done by hand,” said Edison.
Edison grows traditional backyard produce like potatoes, tomatoes and peas, among other foods.
She also has a variety of berries and apples, even some you wouldn’t typically grow in your backyard, like blackberries and lingonberries.
“We do crop rotation for nutrients and growth purposes. We also do a lot of companion planting, so we’re very careful what can be near another thing, beneficial or not,” said Edison.
Since opening in 2002, Edison shared she’s seen an uptick in visitors this season.
“I think part of it is we are education-based. We will do a little education thing on, for example, horseradish. The common person out here will walk right by it and have no idea what it is. Then, they realize what it is, and they’re like, ‘How do you use it? What do you do?’” said Edison.
She said they are getting ready for fall crops like pumpkins and apples for their mid-September event.
Angelic Gardens is open Mondays and Thursdays from 4 to 7 p.m.
It’s located on 11th Avenue Southeast in Minot.
