Garden wall demolished in Steele Crescent, South Bank

A vehicle has crashed into a garden wall in South Bank as an investigation is ongoing to determine whether this incident is linked to wider organised crime. Cleveland Police has confirmed that at 12.34am on Thursday, August 27, a number of calls were made reporting that a vehicle has crashed into a wall at an address on Steele Crescent.

The property was empty at the time of the crash and the force has not received any reports of any injuries. Pictures from the scene show a lone bike in the garden behind the rubble.

Local policing Superintendent Emily Harrison said: “The property was empty at the time and we have not currently received any reports of any injuries. Officers are conducting enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding this incident. Our investigation is in its early stages and it has not yet been confirmed whether this incident is linked to wider organised crime.

“We will continue to have a pro-active police presence in the area and work to identify those responsible. We would also appeal for anyone with information or any relevant doorbell, dash cam or private CCTV footage to contact Cleveland Police via the website or by phoning 101. Please quote ref 171649.”

It comes in the days after a fatal crash on the A66 which resulted in the deaths of seven people. PC Tom Clough, 38, and PC Matthew Blades, 37, lost their lives after the armed response vehicle they were travelling in collided with a Volkswagen Passat, which was travelling the wrong way down the carriageway.

The Passat occupants – Michael Robert Cahill, 23; Theo Rae, 17; Cole Robert Worthy, 17; Jacob Matusiak, 23; and Makai Saddington, 18 – also lost their lives.

It is alleged the home of Cole’s father had been ‘ram-raided’ by another vehicle, with the teen and his pals said to be in pursuit of this car when the Volkswagen Passat travelled the wrong way down a dual carriageway and collided with the police car.

Cleveland Police has said two men, aged 18 and 21, and a 16-year-old boy has also been arrested on suspicion of participating in an organised crime group. Another man, 55, was held on suspicion of assisting an offender and a 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill. All five remain in custody, the force said.

In nearby Grangetown, a murder investigation was launched after the deaths of a little girl and her aunt following a house fire. The two people who died in the fire have been named locally as Valentina Foster, seven, and her 34-year-old aunt Natalie McDonald.

Cleveland Police launched a murder investigation and two men, aged 23 and 31, have been arrested on suspicion of murder. The force said they “cannot rule out any links to wider organised crime at this time”.
