CRANSTON, R.I. (WJAR) — A Rhode Island state lawmaker is vowing to stop the closure of Newport Creamery in Garden City Center.
Jan Companies said Tuesday that it lost the lease on the Cranston location and that the restaurant will close next year. Newport Creamery has been tenant since Garden City Center opened more than 60 years ago.

Rep. Charlene Lima, D-Cranston, said in a release that she’s joining Cranston City Council member Andy Andujar to fight the closure by “any means necessary.”
Lima said Garden City gets no special tax breaks, so she’ll look for another way to pressure WS Development to renew Newport Creamery’s lease,

Lima also said she wants Garden City Center’s owners, WS Development, to hire police details because of what she calls an uptick in crime.
WS Development did not respond to requests for comment Tuesday about Newport Creamery’s closure.
Talk of an Apple Store opening at Garden City Center has been around for years, but there’s been no confirmation of a new store.
