Forty-two special front yard gardens that grow food, provide habitat or make their neighbourhood special were awarded Community Kudos Garden Awards last week.
Residents nominated gardens in the Lively, West End, downtown, Wembley, hospital, South End, Minnow Lake and New Sudbury areas.
“We had so much fun discovering the wonderful gardens people nominated and recognizing these gardeners for making their community better,” said Lilly Noble, co-chair, Coalition for a Liveable Sudbury, in a press release.
“We know there are many more amazing front yard gardens out there. If there’s one that gives you joy, we encourage you to give the gardener some love with kind words or a card to let them know the impact of their efforts.”
Coalition for a Liveable Sudbury invites all residents to see the potential of front yards beyond lawns and create their own special front garden. Front yards can grow food, be pollinator gardens and habitat, manage rainwater run-off, make people smile, or be a neighbourhood gathering place.
Since front yards are visible from the sidewalk and road, they are part of the neighbourhood character and experience. Collectively they can also make a big difference to local pollinators and other wildlife, and the health of our ecosystems and watersheds.
In the press release, Coalition for a Liveable Sudbury thanked these special gardeners for making their community better, the residents for nominating the gardens so that they could be recognized, the workshop participants of all ages for helping to make the cards and awards and Myths and Mirrors for leading the workshops.
