‘Kyle’s Garden’: Humboldt County mother building garden to honor son killed in car crash

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Iowa —
A Humboldt County woman is honoring her deceased son by building a garden with all of his favorite things in her front yard.
Kyle Hilbert was just 13 years old when he was killed in a November car crash.
The driver of a pick-up truck failed to obey a stop sign and hit both Hilbert and his mother, Sara Moore.
Moore said she couldn’t remember what had happened for several days.
But when she heard Kyle didn’t survive, she was devastated.
“It’s like part of your heart disappearing, or your soul left your body,” Moore said. “You’re kind of left like a ghost.”
It’s why now, nine months later, she’s creating “Kyle’s Garden” to remember him.
It features plenty of flowers, a wind chime and signage with Kyle’s name.
There are also several sea shells in the garden because he loved collecting them from a nearby park.
Moore said it’s all decorated to show what Kyle enjoyed most.
“He’s such a nature child, and he liked butterflies and bees,” she said. “So I want to bring all of that in one place and let them grow out there.”
She said it’s her way of making the garden, just like Kyle would have done.
“He would’ve thought it was cool. He would’ve wanted to add seashells to it and decorated it with his own,” Moore said.
Now, she said she’s turning to the public to help Kyle’s Garden grow. If you’d like to donate any plants, you can message Moore on her Facebook profile.
Logan Christensen of Eagle Grove is facing felony homicide charges in connection to the crash.
A blood sample showed he was operating the truck while under the influence of cocaine and THC. Christensen has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
