When thinking about the curb appeal of their properties, most homeowners consider paint color, lighting, and their front door. But what about a vegetable garden in your front yard? Is that a no-go?
A Reddit user posted a photo of their vegetable garden on the platform’s r/gardening forum, writing that their neighbors think the “front yard veggie garden makes the neighborhood look low-class.”
The garden, which is a large collection of containers, did elicit some questions from commenters who wondered why the plants weren’t in the ground. The original poster explained that the garden was a “joint project between my mom and me. I wanted to plant in the ground; she wanted to plant in containers.” The mom won, hence the containers, but they do plan to plant in the ground next year, the poster added.
While the Reddit users in the forum didn’t necessarily agree with the neighbors, many of the commenters concurred that it did look unsightly. “It looks chaotic and haphazard. I’m sure it functions great as it looks great from a plant perspective, but optics do matter to some people.”
Others suggested upgrading the pots for a cleaner look: “It doesn’t look low-class at all; however, it can definitely improve. I recommend prettier planters if you can get your hands on any.”
Another recommended placing wood boards in front of the pots to give the illusion of giant planters. “I did this with a bunch of repurposed containers, and it looked nice.” Some joked that at least the original poster wasn’t using an actual toilet as a planter.
One of the commenters didn’t have an issue with the front yard placement, adding that by planting in the ground, though, the gardener could add fun design elements like “cascading raised beds, tall plants behind shorter plants, trellis arches over the walkway for beans and peas, etc.”
“There are no laws against adding a few bright, vibrant decorative flowers into the mix,” another Redditor added.
