Coeur d’Alene, Idaho — A longtime community garden in Coeur d’Alene is raising money to stay on its land after owners gave the nonprofit until the end of 2027 to buy the property.
The Shared Harvest Community Garden sits in Coeur d’Alene’s Historic Garden District. Organizers said the garden has donated more than 70,000 pounds of fresh produce to local food banks over 18 years.
Last year, the garden donated more than 2,500 pounds, according to organizers. They said about 20 to 25 gardeners cared for the plants, with most of the work happening from April through October and some planning and planting continuing year-round.
Organizers said half of the food first went to donations, but that share had grown to closer to 80%. Gardeners took home some of the rest.
The landowners had allowed volunteers to use the plot for a shared garden for nearly two decades. Organizers said the owners now planned to sell the land and gave the nonprofit until the end of 2027 to raise $1.2 million to buy it long term.
A key fundraiser was planned for this Saturday. Organizers described Dinner Under the Stars as an annual fundraiser that actually happened once every couple of years.
Volunteers said about 50 tickets were still available. The event was set to start at 5 p.m. with tables across the lawn, live music, a silent auction and a chicken dinner with fresh produce.
Some of that produce came from the garden itself.
