PowerBank, a US energy firm, has regained ownership of two community solar installations in New York with a combined output of 13.9MW and an aggregate construction cost of US$32.5 million.
The 6.9MW Highway 28 facility is slated to be ready for construction in Q3 2026, with the 7MW Gainesville site anticipated to reach that stage in 2027. Interconnection agreements have been executed for both developments. Highway 28 has obtained key discretionary permits and US$893,445 in funding from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, plus an anticipated US$1.52 million via the Inclusive Community Solar Adder initiative. Site preparation activities are already underway.
Richard Lu, PowerBank’s chief executive, stated that the firm is expanding its independent power producer portfolio by taking back these two distributed solar projects in New York. He highlighted that these are assets the company originally conceived, developed, and secured grid connections for, giving it deep familiarity with them and clarity on what is required to achieve commercial operation. He added that the purchase aligns with the company’s strategic pivot toward asset ownership, which generates steady revenue streams, and expressed anticipation for full on-site mobilization at Highway 28 shortly, given its advanced development stage.
PowerBank indicated that both projects are likely to maintain eligibility for federal investment tax credits under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, since physical work commenced prior to the 4 July 2026 cutoff. The firm projects these installations will yield US$13 million in federal ITCs. The assets had been divested to an investor as part of a broader deal announced in January 2025, and PowerBank reacquired them following a disclosure in April 2026. The purchase prices are US$1.25 million for Highway 28 and US$1.15 million for Gainesville, to be settled via milestone-based payments. Both facilities are intended to function as community solar projects upon completion.
Additionally, PowerBank continues to progress its distributed energy portfolio. In Nova Scotia, Canada, the company spearheaded the 6.86MW Brooklyn ground-mounted community solar project, which finished its environmental permitting process this month. In Ontario, PowerBank is advancing approvals for its 903MW utility-scale battery energy storage project while ongoing construction proceeds on local solar initiatives, including a 4MW development in North Bruce Peninsula. In the prior year, PowerBank Corporation secured a loan agreement with NY Green Bank for a revolving credit line with an initial cap of US$8 million, designated for utility interconnection deposits related to solar and BESS projects in New York.
In separate news, US community solar developer SunShare has finished and connected the 6MWdc Juniper Sol community solar garden in Santa Fe County, New Mexico. This 31-acre site is projected to supply power to roughly 2,000 homes and integrates agrivoltaic methods, including the establishment of native and pollinator-friendly vegetation. The facility began commercial operations on 1 July. SunShare also brought online the 4.5MWdc Rockhound Sol community solar project in Deming, New Mexico. These two installations represent SunShare’s initial community solar ventures in the state.
David Amster-Olszewski, SunShare’s CEO, remarked that the Juniper Sol project illustrates how community-based solar can address rising electricity demand efficiently and affordably, while also delivering advantages such as electricity savings for the 2,000 families subscribed to the garden over the next 25 years. SunShare, established in 2011 and based in Denver, Colorado, boasts over 110MW of operational community solar capacity and a 455MW development pipeline as of 2026. Its Colorado holdings include the 5MW Uncompahgre Community Solar Garden in Weld County, and its pipeline features a 12MW portfolio awarded by Xcel Energy for six projects in the Denver metro area.
