Logee’s Plants for Home & Garden in Danielson was named among HGTV’s must-visit garden centers across the country.

HGTV named a notable garden center in each state, with Logee’s being their choice for Connecticut. The list of top garden centers was determined through extensive research and interviews.

HGTV named Logee’s a must-visit garden center because of its variety of offerings. Founded in 1892, the greenhouses that make up Logees have been a staple for decades. While it started as a cut flower business, it became focused on tropical and unsual plants. These day, the campus is divided into green houses based on plant type, including  the fern house, herb house, potting house, lemon tree house, big house and long house.

One of the features it’s most well-known for is a Poderosa lemon tree that is more than 100 years old.

In 1900, founder William Logee “bought a small Ponderosa Lemon tree from a grower in Philadelphia. It was known as the ‘American Wonder Lemon’ because the fruit could get as large as 5 pounds,” the history section on Logee’s website says. “He felt the tree was essential for the Logee’s collection. It was shipped via train, then picked up by horse and buggy and planted directly into the ground in the original greenhouse.”

In addition to the Ponderosa lemon tree, there are other old fruit trees and unusual, well-established tropical plants planted throughout the greenhouse.

Per HGTV, the Big House has cacti, succulents, geraniums and even a 150-year-old kumquat tree. HGTV highlighted the Long House’s many blooming, rare and fruiting plants as well as the greenhouse’s hybrid begonias.
