Lotus and Water Lily Festival at Kenilworth Park & Aquatic Gardens

One of the District’s most breathtaking natural attractions is about to reach its peak as the annual Lotus and Water Lily Festival returns to Kenilworth Park & Aquatic Gardens this weekend.

For two days only, visitors can stroll among towering lotus flowers and vibrant water lilies while enjoying live cultural performances, outdoor wellness sessions, art activities, and family programming.

The festival is one of the National Park Service’s signature summer events and celebrates both the spectacular seasonal blooms and the diverse cultures connected to these iconic aquatic plants.

Best of all, admission is completely free, making it one of the best budget-friendly things to do around D.C. this weekend.

When is the Lotus and Water Lily Festival at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens?

The 2026 Lotus and Water Lily Festival takes place Saturday, July 18th, and Sunday, July 19th, from 10 am to 6 pm each day at Kenilworth Park & Aquatic Gardens in Northeast Washington, D.C.

The annual festival coincides with the peak bloom season for the gardens’ famous lotus flowers and water lilies, which transform the ponds into one of the most colorful landscapes in the nation’s capital.

This year’s celebration also features a special America 250 theme, highlighting the nation’s shared history alongside the natural beauty and cultural traditions connected to lotus and water lilies.

Because the festival draws thousands of visitors each summer, the National Park Service recommends arriving early—especially if you plan to drive—as parking fills quickly.

What to expect at this year’s festival

Beyond the stunning flowers, visitors can enjoy a full weekend of activities celebrating nature, wellness, art, and culture.

Festival highlights include:

🌸 Cultural music and dance performances.

🧘 Outdoor yoga, mindfulness, meditation, and forest bathing sessions.

🎨 Arts, crafts, and creative workshops.

👨‍👩‍👧 Ranger-led activities and family-friendly educational programs.

📸 Incredible opportunities for photography among the blooming lotus and water lilies.

Visitors are encouraged to bring water, sunscreen, hats, and comfortable walking shoes, as much of the gardens have limited shade during the heat of July.

Lawn chairs and picnic blankets are welcome, and leashed dogs are also permitted.

Is the Lotus and Water Lily Festival free to attend?

Yes. Admission to both the Lotus and Water Lily Festival and Kenilworth Park & Aquatic Gardens is completely free.

While there is no cost to attend, visitors should plan ahead for transportation.

The park’s parking lot is relatively small and fills up quickly during the festival, so the National Park Service strongly encourages taking Metro, biking via the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail, or using alternate parking options.

The nearest Metro station is Deanwood, with an approximately 15- to 20-minute walk to the gardens due to ongoing pedestrian bridge construction.

Food and drinks will be available for purchase throughout the festival, but guests are also welcome to bring their own snacks or picnic to enjoy in designated picnic areas.

Whether you’re hoping to capture spectacular photos, experience one of D.C.’s most unique natural settings, or simply spend a relaxing summer day outdoors, this beloved annual festival offers one of the city’s most memorable seasonal experiences.
