Annual ‘Tomato Days’ plant sale begins at Kansas City Community Gardens
KANSAS CITY, Mo. —
Kansas City Community Gardens are kicking off the summer gardening season with their annual “Tomato Days” plant sale.
The sale is open to low-income KCCG members starting Thursday, where they’ll have the opportunity to select low-priced seed, vegetables and herbs at the garden at 6917 Kensington Ave.
The nonprofit grows around 200,000 plants, which are then sold to the community at a reduced price to help out low-income residents.
“We are a nonprofit that helps people successfully grow their own food, and we know that a lot of people are on tight grocery budgets. … The cost of food has really gone up,” said Jennifer Meyer, executive director of KCCG. “And a great way to supplement your diet with healthier fruits and veggies is to grow your own. But gardening can be expensive, too, so that’s where Kansas City Community Gardens comes in.”
The “Tomato Days” plant sale opens to remaining members Friday and will run through Saturday at the KCCG headquarters. Customers will be limited to 10 three packs of vegetable plants and 30 packs of seeds during the sale.
The sale runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
Plants will continue to be available for purchase at the office for several weeks until supplies run out.
