COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – Members of the Columbia Garden Club dedicated a statue of their founder during a celebration of its 100th anniversary Friday.

Club members dedicated the life-sized bronze statue of Sarah Smith Boylston at her historic home on the Governor’s Mansion and Gardens Property.

Members said that Boylston helped create a garden space to welcome all South Carolinians and visitors to the state capital. They also praised Boylston’s legacy, saying that her garden’s beauty reflects the people of South Carolina and that the new statue will serve as a lasting reminder of her service to the state.

“This woman and the other women in the Columbia Garden Club who started this organization were what I call shakers and movers,” Jane Suggs, a club member, said. “And they accomplished so much in their tenure, and I’m very proud to be a member of this club because we have held on to the purpose of this club for the last 100 years.”

Club leaders said that its members have planted over 10,000 trees in the community over the last century and have donated $500,000 in grants for civic beautification projects through its foundation.
