It’s a mystery to many who visit Sioux Falls. That’s maybe what makes them so exciting to finally see. Rooftop gardens are featured in a few locations in downtown. While they aren’t the exact same as Frances Hodgson Burnett’s, they are secret to many.
The owners of the Boyce-Greeley Building on Phillips Avenue were nice enough to invite KSFY into their home and on their rooftop that looks right over the heart of downtown.
“We love living downtown, so having the rooftop space is great. We can have the urban experience and still garden. It’s really special,” Ivy Dandar said.
Ivy and her husband David have been renovating the historic building for the past decade. The rooftop garden is a big addition to the condominium and business space.
Ivy says, it really is an ideal spot to grow many flowers, fruits and vegetables.
“The gardening feels like cheat gardening. We have drip irrigation, no pests and we have these bumper crops that we get to share,” she said.
They do share. They share the semi-private space with others who live in their building. One tenant we spoke with says he thinks it’s the best spot in the world.
“They took this old junk pile that was here for many years and turned it into this nice building. I like to come out here and sit in the sun,” tenant Richard Westhoff said.
It’s just another eye-popping addition to the growing city
“My friends thought I was nuts buying downtown in 2001. They thought I was crazy. It’s really enjoyable to see the dramatic change,” David Dandar said.
